MEAC Announces Weekly Women’s Basketball Honors, presented by Coca-Cola

NORFOLK, Va., Feb. 9, 2021Howard senior Jayla Thornton was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, the conference office announced today. Howard’s Anzhane’ Hutton was named Rookie of the Week, while Coppin State junior Jalynda Salley was named Defensive Player of the Week.
 
Thornton (G, 5-10, Sr., Newark, N.J.) became the MEAC’s all-time 3-point shooter this past weekend, breaking the career 3-pointers made mark previously held by Bethune-Cookman’s Kendra Cooper (2014-17). Thornton now has 261 made 3-pointers in her career. She dropped 21 points in Saturday’s win over Morgan State and averaged 16.5 points for the weekend set against the Lady Bears.
 
Hutton (F, 6-0, Fr., Cedar Hill, Texas) averaged a double-double against Morgan State this past weekend, with 14.0 points and 10.5 rebounds a contest. On Saturday, she had 13 points and 14 boards, and on Sunday, she added 15 points and seven rebounds. For the weekend, Hutton also averaged 2.0 blocked shots and a steal a contest, including three blocks in Sunday’s contest.
 
Salley (C, 6-4, Jr., Reynoldsburg, Ohio) averaged 16.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocked shots in two games this past week. She grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds (13 on the defensive end) against Morgan State this past Tuesday, while also blocking three shots. On Saturday against Delaware State, she grabbed 16 more boards (eight defensive) to go along with two blocks and a steal.
 
Other Top Performers
Kiana Coomber (Delaware State) recorded her first double-double as a Hornet with 18 points and 13 rebounds against Coppin State.
 
Adia Brisker (Morgan State) had eight rebounds and three steals against Howard on Saturday, after turning in a four-steal effort against Coppin State.
 
Dahnye Redd (Morgan State) scored 18 and 15 points, respectively, in a pair of games against Howard.
