MEAC Announces Weekly Men’s Basketball Honors, presented by Coca-Cola

NORFOLK, Va., Feb. 9, 2021 Norfolk State senior guard Devante Carter has been tabbed Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, it was announced on Tuesday.  Morgan State junior guard Malik Miller is the MEAC Defensive Player of the Week and Coppin State freshman guard Nendah Tarke is the Rookie of the Week.
 
Carter (G, 6-3, 210, Sr., Newport News, Va.) scored a career-high 31 points to go along with eight rebounds, seven assists and two steals in Sunday’s win over Coppin State, in what was the highest point production by a Norfolk State player in four years. On Monday, he added 16 points with nine rebounds and eight assists, the latter a season high. Over the two games against the Eagles, Carter averaged 23.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 7.5 assists and 1.5 steals.
 
Miller (G, 6-4, 191, Jr., Washington, D.C.) had 17 rebounds to go along with three steals and two blocked shots in Morgan State’s lone game of the week, a victory over Delaware State. He registered his sixth double-double of the season by also scoring 19 points in the contest. His 17 boards are a season-high for any MEAC player this season, and Miller continues to lead the league with 8.9 boards per contest (48th in the nation).
 
Tarke (G, 6-4, 190, Fr., Gaithersburg, Md.) had back-to-back 19-point games, plus a 12-point outing, averaging 16.7 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.0 steals as Coppin State went 1-2 in its last three games. He connected on 55.7 percent of his shots from the field and 75 percent of his shots from the free throw line. This is Tarke’s fourth time winning or sharing MEAC Rookie of the Week honors this season.
 
Other Top Performers
Anthony Tarke (Coppin State) averaged 15.3 points, 7.7 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.0 blocked shots in three games this past week. His top outing was a 22-point, 10-rebound double-double against Delaware State, a game in which he also had four assists, two blocks and two steals.
 
C.J. Keyser (North Carolina Central) averaged 14.0 points and 6.5 rebounds in a weekend that saw the Eagles defeat South Carolina State and fall to Florida A&M. He had 15 points, five rebounds, four assists and two blocks against the Bulldogs.
