MEAC Announces Weekly Bowling Honors, presented by Coca-Cola

NORFOLK, Va., Feb. 9, 2021University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) senior Samantha Johnson was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Bowler of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, the conference office announced today. Monmouth’s Jamie Phelan was named Rookie of the Week.
 
Johnson (Sr., Apopka, Fla.) helped UAB win the Railsplitter Classic in dominating fashion this past weekend, earning All-Tournament honors after finishing third in the individual standings with a 212.6 pinfall average. She totaled 1,063 pins in traditional play, and UAB notched multiple wins over nationally-ranked Lincoln Memorial and Valparaiso. Johnson racked up three 200+ games, including a weekend-best 232.
 
Phelan (r-Fr., Happy Valley, Australia) started her collegiate career with a 12th-place effort at the Northeast Classic, averaging 195.8 pins and notching three games of 200 or better. She bowled a weekend-best 236, which was the fourth-highest single-game total of the tournament.
 
Other Top Performers
Stefanny Toala (Delaware State) was second at the Northeast Classic, rolling a weekend-high 224 and averaging 204.6 pins in traditional play.
 
Saige Yamada (Monmouth) was ninth at the Northeast Classic, averaging 201.6 pins and racking up three 200+ games.
 
Melanie Katen (North Carolina A&T State) was 13th at the Northeast Classic, averaging 194.6 pins and bowling a weekend high of 209.
 
Ana Olaya (North Carolina A&T State) averaged 204.6 pins at the Northeast Classic and rolled a weekend-high 256, coming in fifth in the individual standings.
