WASHINGTON, D.C., Feb. 7, 2021 -- Dahnye Redd scored a team-high 15 points and Adia Brisker added 11, as the Lady Bears defeated Howard, 65-61 on Sunday afternoon at Burr Gymnasium. Morgan State moved back on top of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division standings with the win, while Howard fell to second.
The win helped Morgan State earn a series split this weekend, as well as a season split against Howard with both teams winning two games apiece.
Morgan State improved to 9-3 overall and 6-2 in the MEAC. The Lady Bears also avenged their lone home loss of the season, which came to Howard (1/2), by handing the Bison (9-3, 5-2 MEAC) their first home loss of the season.
Howard was led by Iyanna Warren, who scored 17 points, dished out a game-high eight assists and had seven rebounds. Anzhane' Hutton finished with 15 points, seven rebounds and had a game-high three blocks. Jayla Thornton, who knocked down two three-pointers to become the MEAC's all-time leader in three-pointers made, finished with 12 points.
Morgan State led 29-23 at the intermission and held its largest lead of the contest at eight points, when Ashia McCalla scored on a layup up early in the third quarter to give the guests a 31-23 lead. Triggered by a three-pointer by Thornton, the Bison went on an 18-8 run to erase the deficit and take a two-point lead (41-39) on Kaiya Creek's layup with 4:12 to play in the third.
The two would trade leads five times and had two ties for the next 4:11 of the third until Ja'Niah Henson was fouled on a three-point attempt with a second left on the clock. Henson hit all three free throws to up the Lady Bears' lead to 50-46 at the end of three quarters.
Morgan State maintained its lead throughout the fourth and extended it to a six-point advantage when Nina Carpenter hit a turnaround jumper in the lane with 2:40 to play to give the guests a 60-54 lead.
Howard would continue to fight and behind a mini 7-2 run, the Bison pulled within a point at 62-61 after Warren, who went 11-for-14 from the free throw line, connected on two free throws with 12 seconds to play. Morgan State closed out the game hitting three of its final four free throw attempts to secure the four-point victory.
The Lady Bears finished the game shooting 24-of-61 (39 percent). Morgan State was just 1-for-11 (9 percent) from three-point range and hit 73 percent (16-of-22) from the free throw line.
The host Bison shot 32 percent for the game, connecting on 21-of-66 attempts. Howard went 3-of-18 (17 percent) from beyond the three-point arc and shot 59 percent (16-of-27) from the free throw line.
