Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) basketball continues to roll on as Week 11 gets underway with more conference action – the stretch run that always comes when the calendar flips to February. As always, the specter of COVID-19 hangs over everything, and games are subject to change.
For the third consecutive week, Morgan State had a player named MEAC Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, and this time, it was Troy Baxter who received the honor. Baxter led all players with a season high 28 points on 10-of-22 shooting. He also added seven boards, one block, and an assist.
Norfolk State’s Joe Bryant, Jr. was named MEAC Co-Player of the Week along with Baxter after pouring in a game high 24 points on six-of-nine shooting from behind the arc to go along with five rebounds and five assists. Bryant made perfect from the line in five attempts.
Anthony Tarke continued his impressive run and was named MEAC Defensive Player of the Week for the fifth straight week and seventh time this season. The Maryland product continues to be a menace on the defensive end. He had his fifth double-double in the last six games, finishing with 16 points, 11 boards, four blocks and four steals.
North Carolina Central’s Justin Wright was named MEAC Rookie of the Week after scoring his first career points. He finished with 12 points, six rebounds, six assists, and four steals in a win over Carver Baptist.
After Morgan State defeated Coppin State in a makeup game on Tuesday, the Bears have a half-game lead in the Northern Division standings over their crosstown rivals. The Eagles will look to sweep the season series with Norfolk State when they travel to Echols Hall this weekend.
Morgan State was scheduled to travel to the nation’s capital to take on Howard, but the Bison have postponed both games due to continued issues surrounding COVID-19. The second game was scheduled to be played on Monday on ESPNU, but that contest will now go to Coppin State at Norfolk State.
Morgan State will host Delaware State on Saturday afternoon.
North Carolina Central will host Florida A&M this weekend, as the Eagles look to extend a three-game winning streak. Riding a five-game winning streak, North Carolina A&T State will welcome South Carolina State to Corbett Sports Center this weekend. Sunday’s contest will be streamed live on FloHoops.
The Aggies sit atop the MEAC Southern Division at 4-0.
