Hornets Squeak by Lancaster Bible for First Win of 2020-21

DOVER, Del., Feb. 3, 2021 –
Delaware State trailed by seven points with less than three minutes to play before rallying to defeat Lancaster Bible 81-80 for the Hornets' first win of the season in Memorial Hall  on Wednesday.

The Hornets scored the winning basket on a driving lay-up by Pinky Wiley (sr.) to pull ahead 81-80 with 21 seconds left in the game. Wiley was fouled on the play, but missed the free throw, giving the Chargers a chance to pull out a last possession win.

On the ensuing Lancaster Bible possession, Jordan Shewbridge drove into the lane, but his shot was blocked by DSU's Shaft Clark. After the Hornets collected the rebound, Wiley was fouled again but missed the front end of a 1-and-1 at the line, giving the Chargers another chance to pull out the late win. This time, the Hornets forced a Lancaster Bible turnover to seal the victory.

Delaware State's Myles Carter (sr.) led all players with 21 points on 10-for-14 shooting from the field, including a three-pointer (1-2). Carter has reached double figures in scoring in the last eight games, and 10 of the 11 contests in which he has appeared this season. The performance raised his team-high scoring average to 15.7 points per game this season. He was sixth in the MEAC in scoring entering the contest.

Wiley added 17 points and a game-high five assists, while Zach Kent contributed 11 points, two blocks and seven rebounds to the win.  

Shewbridge led six double-figure scorers for Lancaster Bible with 20 points, highlighted by five three-pointers (5-10).

Andrew Zenter came off the bench to add 13 points and grab a game-high 13 rebounds for the Chargers.

Delaware State led by as many as 13 points in the first half, but settled for a 45-38 advantage at intermission.

The Hornets hit 16 of their 30 first half shots (53.3%), while forcing Lancaster Bible into 40.6% shooting (13-for-32) n the opening 20 minutes.

The Chargers outscored DSU 6-2 to start the second half, and pulled to within 47-44 on a follow-up basket by Britton Beachy with 17:06 left to play.

Delaware State answered with a three-pointer by Ameer Bennett and a basket by Kent to regain an eight-point lead at 52-44.

Lancaster Bible pulled to within a point on three occasions midway through the second half, but the Hornets managed to stay ahead.

The Chargers put on another surge after Delaware State opened up a 69-61 lead on a 3-point shot by Wiley at the 8:02 mark of the second half.

LBC went on an 11-2 run over the next three minutes, and led for the first time in the game, 72-71, on a corner 3-pointer by Shewbridge with 5:12 remaining.

The Chargers then scored on three of their next four possessions while holding DSU scoreless to stretch their lead to 78-71.

Delaware State trailed 80-73 before mounting its late charge. Carter scored back-to-back baskets and Wiley hit a turn-around jumper to cut the deficit to 80-79 with 43 seconds left in the game. The Hornets forced three LBC turnovers to also fuel the rally.

The Hornets shot 45.6% for the game, connecting on 31 of their 68 shots from the field, including 7-for-19 from beyond the arc (36.8%).

Lancaster Bible made good on 29 of its 64 shots (45.3%), including 10 for 25 from 3-point range (40.0%).

The Chargers held a 42-35 rebound advantage, although the Hornets committed just 14 turnovers, while forcing Lancaster Bible into 20.
