NORFOLK, Va., Feb. 23, 2021—
North Carolina A&T State graduate student Chanin Scott and
Norfolk State senior Armani Franklin were selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women’s Basketball Co-Players of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, the conference office announced today.
Howard’s Destiny Howell was named Rookie of the Week, while
North Carolina Central sophomore Anissa Rivera was named Defensive Player of the Week.
Scott (G, 6-0, Gr., Charlotte, N.C.) averaged 17.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game this past weekend as the Southern Division first-place Aggies split a twinbill with Norfolk State. She was a combined 14-for-27 from the floor, and in Saturday’s comeback win, she had 19 points, five boards, three assists and a steal. On Sunday, she added 15 points, five rebounds and two assists.
Franklin (G, 5-5, Sr., Hampton, Va.) averaged 16.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game this past weekend against North Carolina A&T State, going a combined 10-for-18 (.556) from the floor. She dropped 17 points and grabbed eight boards on Sunday, when the Spartans handed the Aggies their first conference loss of the season, following a 15-point, 5-rebound effort on Saturday.
Howell (G, 5-11, Fr., Queens, N.Y.) scored in double figures in both of the Bison’s wins over Coppin State this past weekend – including an 11-point effort on Saturday in which she went 4-for-6 from the floor and hit all three of her 3-pointers. She added 10 more points on Sunday.
Rivera (F, 6-1, So., Capitol Heights, Md.) averaged 9.5 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 2.5 blocks per game as the Eagles took on Georgia Southern twice this past weekend. In Saturday’s game, Rivera grabbed 12 rebounds (nine defensive), while grabbing three steals and blocking three shots, before turning in seven rebounds, three steals and two blocks on Sunday.
Other Top Performers
Hope Evans (Coppin State) had five points, six rebounds and three assists on Saturday against Howard.
Aliyah Lawson (Coppin State) dropped 21 points on Saturday against Howard, hitting five 3-pointers.
Jalynda Salley (Coppin State) grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked two shots in Sunday’s contest against Howard.
Anzhane’ Hutton (Howard) recorded a double-double against Coppin State on Saturday with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while also blocking two shots.
Iyanna Warren (Howard) scored in double figures in both wins over Coppin State, including a 16-point, 5-rebound, 4-assist, 2-steal effort on Saturday.
Jayla Jones-Pack (North Carolina A&T State) had two blocks each in a weekend split with Norfolk State, while also averaging 7.5 rebounds in two contests.
Faith Williams (North Carolina Central) scored 17 points to go along with four rebounds, three assists and two steals on Saturday against Georgia Southern.
