MEAC Announces Weekly Volleyball Honors, presented by Coca-Cola

NORFOLK, Va., Feb. 22, 2021North Carolina A&T State redshirt junior Fatimah Shabazz was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, the conference office announced today. Coppin State’s Chudear Tut was named Rookie of the Week, while Coppin State junior Kareemah Hopkins earned Setter of the Week honors and Howard redshirt junior Ana Williams was named Defensive Specialist of the Week.
 
Shabazz (6-0, r-Jr., RS, Cincinnati, Ohio) hit a combined .429 in two matches and averaged 4.33 kills per set in helping the Aggies sweep a pair of matches against rival North Carolina Central to remain unbeaten in MEAC play. On Friday, Shabazz had 11 kills and just two errors, while also assisting on a pair of blocks, and on Saturday, she racked up 15 more kills and two block assists.
 
Tut (6-2, Fr., MH, Minneapolis, Minn.) hit .421 against Howard, racking up 10 kills and adding a pair of block assists in the narrow five-set defeat. On Sunday, she added nine kills and a .389 hitting percentage, to go along with three block assists, against UMBC.
 
Hopkins (5-11, Jr., S, San Diego, Calif.) racked up 42 assists against Howard (the third time she’s eclipsed the 40-assist mark this season), to go along with seven digs and three kills (and no errors), before recording 19 assists in two sets against UMBC. Hopkins added two more kills in that match, and she went error-free for the weekend.
 
Williams (5-11, r-Jr., MB, Baker, La.) had five total blocks in Friday’s five-set win over Coppin State. She assisted on four of those blocks and recorded one solo as the Bison picked up their first conference win of the season.
 
Other Top Performers
Ashley Roman (Coppin State) racked up 27 digs against Howard.
 
Jennifer Bolden (Howard) had 10 kills on .233 hitting against Coppin State.
 
Milexa Cardona (Howard) recorded a double-double against Coppin State with 22 assists and 10 digs.
 
Kailyn Williams (Howard) had 14 kills, 10 digs and four blocks against Coppin State.
 
Edie Brewer (North Carolina A&T State) averaged 23.0 assists, 7.5 kills and 6.5 digs per match in a pair of wins over North Carolina Central.
 
Shaylynn Hall (North Carolina A&T State) had a combined five total blocks in two matches against North Carolina Central.
 
Lauren Janok (North Carolina Central) averaged 21.0 assists in two matches against North Carolina A&T State.
