Norfolk State senior guard Devante Carter has been tabbed Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, Presented by Coca-Cola, it was announced on Tuesday. Carter’s teammate,
redshirt senior forward J.J. Matthews, landed MEAC Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Carter (G, 6-3, 210, Sr., Newport News, Va.) led the Spartans to back-to-back victories over Morgan State over the weekend, averaging 19.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists en route to capturing Player of the Week honors for the second straight week and third time this season. He scored 20 points with three rebounds and three assists in the 74-69 win over the Bears on Saturday, followed by 19 points with six rebounds and five assists in a 68-65 victory on Sunday. Carter shot 88.2 percent from the free throw line over the weekend, including a perfect 9-for-9 on Sunday.
Matthews (F, 6-9, 250, r-Sr., Richmond, Va.) averaged 6.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.5 blocked shots in the victories over Morgan State. He had nine points with six boards and a blocked shot on Sunday, preceded by an outing of four points, four rebounds, two blocks and a steal on Saturday His two blocked shots on Saturday were a career high. This is Matthews’ second time winning MEAC Defensive Player of the Week honors this season, having shared the honor on Dec. 1.
