GREENSBORO, N.C. -- 
North Carolina A&T State started the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) schedule with a convincing three-set win (25-18, 25-16, 25-14) over Norfolk State at Moore Gymnasium on Thursday. 

Junior middle blocker Fatimah Shabazz led the Aggies with a game-high 12 kills and added six digs and three blocks with a .292 hitting percentage. Senior setter Edie Brewer added a game-high 19 assists and a game-high 12 digs for her second consecutive double-double to start the year.

Brewer also added seven kills, a block, two service aces and a .393 hitting percentage to her totals. 

Junior middle blocker Shaylynn Hall led the team with a game-high five blocks, including two solo blocks, and added seven kills with a .636 hitting percentage. Junior libero Andrea Laboy-Rivera added nine digs and five assists with a service ace.

Junior outside hitter Amalie Rupertova added five kills, while sophomore setter Addy Warfield added 12 assists and five digs.

Junior Ammaarah Williams led all players with 13.5 points to pace North Carolina Central to a season-opening 3-0 MEAC Southern Division victory at South Carolina State on Thursday evening.
 
The Eagles recorded 12 aces and hit .433 as a team in rolling to the 25-7, 25-11, 25-14 triumph.
 
Williams finished with seven kills, three aces and five blocks (two solo, three assists) for her 13.5 points.
 
NCCU (1-0 overall, 1-0 MEAC) scored the first nine points of the match and was never threatened in its ninth straight win over South Carolina State (0-1, 0-1).
 
Junior Jasmine Sanders topped the Eagles with 10 kills. She blasted her 10 kills on 17 attempts without an error for a .588 hitting percentage. Junior Arlanda Faulkner added six kills, senior McKayla Young tallied five kills and sophomore Abby Vacha netted four kills.

Villanova 3, Coppin State 2

BALTIMORE, Md. -- 
Coppin State's upset bid against Villanova came just short as the Eagles fell to the Wildcats, 3-2 (25-16, 18-25, 23-25, 25-19, 15-13) on Thursday night at PEC Arena.

Coppin now stands at 1-2 on the season while Villanova moves to 1-0.

The Wildcats finished 22-9 last season and were ranked 60th in RPI.
 
The Eagles hit a school-record in a five-set match, notching a .320 hitting percentage with three players reaching double figures in kills.  After struggling in the opening set, Miajavon Coleman came through with a match-high 14 kills while hitting .250, along with a pair of blocks and five digs. 
 
Middle hitters Jordan Celestine and Chudear Tut continued their impressive play with Celestine hitting a whopping .588, recording 12 kills on 17 swings and a team-high three blocks. A freshman from Minneapolis, Tut added a season-high 11 kills and a .304 hitting percentage.
