MEAC Announces Weekly Women’s Basketball Honors, presented by Coca-Cola

NORFOLK, Va., Dec. 7, 2021Coppin State graduate student guard Jaia Alexander and Howard sophomore guard Destiny Howell were selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women’s Basketball Co-Players of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, the conference office announced today. Morgan State freshman guard Emily Jones was named Rookie of the Week, while Norfolk State sophomore forward Mahoganie Williams earned Defensive Player of the Week honors.
 
Alexander (5-11, Gr., G, Baltimore, Md.) dropped a team-high 24 points on 10-for-17 shooting (.590), hitting two of her three 3-point attempts, and grabbed seven rebounds in the Eagles’ 77-69 win over Marshall this past Saturday.
 
Howell (5-11, So., G, Queens, N.Y.) averaged 19.0 points per game in a pair of wins for the Bison this past week, going a combined 14-for-28 (.500) from the floor and knocking down three 3-pointers in each game. She opened with a career-high 21 points against Loyola (Md.) this past Wednesday, going 7-for-12 from the floor, before dropping 17 points and hitting the game-winner in overtime against Hofstra on Saturday.
 
Jones (5-10, Fr., G, San Francisco, Calif.) came off the bench to score eight points on 4-for-6 shooting in the Bears’ 71-50 win over Navy on Thursday. She also grabbed three rebounds and dished out a pair of assists in the victory.
 
Williams (6-1, So., F, Monroe, La.) averaged 5.0 blocks in two games this past week for the Spartans. She blocked four shots against Hampton on Saturday, before turning in a career-high six blocks on Monday in a win at George Mason. Monday’s contest also saw Williams notch a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds (nine on the defensive end).
 
Other Top Performers
Colleen Bucknor (Coppin State) grabbed 10 rebounds (eight defensive) against Marshall to go along with six points.
 
Jewel Watkins (Coppin State) had seven points and four rebounds against Marshall.
 
Zoe Holmes (Delaware State) had 11 points, 11 rebounds and five steals against Saint Peter’s.
 
Joy Watkins (Delaware State) dropped 17 points against Saint Peter’s, hitting four 3-pointers.
 
Krislyn Marsh (Howard) had 13 points and 11 rebounds against Loyola (Md.).
 
Amanda Carney (Maryland Eastern Shore) had back-to-back strong games against Richmond (13 points, nine rebounds, three assists) and Navy (12 points, six rebounds, four assists).
 
Dahnye Redd (Morgan State) recorded a double-double (20 points, 10 rebounds) against Navy, going 9-for-14 from the floor in the win.
 
Charlene Shepherd (Morgan State) blocked three shots against Navy and had a pair of steals against Hofstra, while also scoring in double figures in both games (13 points vs. Navy, 10 points vs. Hofstra).
 
Trinity Klock (South Carolina State) had 13 points and nine rebounds against Campbell.
