NORFOLK, Va., Nov. 8, 2021Delaware State junior Karen Cordero was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Co-Players of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, the conference office announced today. Howard’s Bria Woodard was named Rookie of the Week and Coppin State junior Andrea Tsvetanova was named Setter of the Week, while Delaware State junior Jasmal Cruz and Howard senior Nina Askew shared Defensive Player of the Week honors.
 
Cordero (5-9, Jr., OH, Chula Vista, Calif.) averaged 3.8 kills and 3.3 digs per set this past weekend in wins over Morgan State and Coppin State. She fell just shy of a double-double against Morgan State with eight kills and nine digs, while also adding a service ace and a block assist – before turning in a 22-kill, 17-dig effort on Sunday against Coppin State.
 
Woodard (6-3, Fr., OH, Missouri City, Texas) averaged 3.1 kills and 2.1 digs per set as the Bison extended their winning streak to eight matches, hitting a combined .298 against North Carolina Central and South Carolina State. She had 13 kills, nine digs, an ace and a block assist against the Eagles, before turning in nine kills and six digs against the Bulldogs.
 
Tsvetanova (5-9, Jr., S, Sofia, Bulgaria) averaged 8.9 assists and 3.2 digs per set for the Eagles, recording double-doubles in both matches. She had 40 assists and 10 digs against Maryland Eastern Shore, while also recording four service aces, before turning in a 38-assist, 19-dig performance on Sunday against Delaware State.
 
Cruz (5-7, Jr., L, Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) notched a career-high 32 digs in a five-set win over Coppin State this past Sunday, tying for the MEAC single-match high for the season and ending up just three digs shy of the program single-match record.
 
Askew (6-1, Sr., MB, Fairfax, Va.) racked up a match-high 10 total blocks (including five solo) to go along with six kills and three digs in the Bison’s four-set win over South Carolina State – which extended Howard’s winning streak to eight matches.
 
Other Top Performers
Hope Casel (Coppin State) had 10 kills against Delaware State and eight against Maryland Eastern Shore.
 
Miajavon Coleman (Coppin State) racked up 17 kills and 14 digs against Delaware State, after turning in a 15-kill effort against Maryland Eastern Shore.
 
Malgorzata Andersohn (Delaware State) recorded a double-double against Coppin State with 29 assists and 13 digs (to go along with four service aces).
 
Milexa Cardona (Howard) had 25 assists and 11 digs against North Carolina Central.
 
Mauri Carver (Maryland Eastern Shore) had six total blocks against Morgan State and three against Coppin State.
 
Gabriela Hiciano (Morgan State) racked up 11 kills against Delaware State and nine against Maryland Eastern Shore.
 
Mackenzie Jefferson (Morgan State) racked up 28 assists and 14 digs against Maryland Eastern Shore.
 
Caris Cross (Norfolk State) had 39 assists and seven digs against North Carolina Central and added 33 assists against South Carolina State.
 
Nicole Rodriguez (Norfolk State) racked up 29 digs against North Carolina Central and 20 against South Carolina State.
 
Rachel Williams (Norfolk State) recorded a double-double against North Carolina Central with 15 kills and 13 digs.
 
Lauren Janok (North Carolina Central) recorded a double-double against Norfolk State with 46 assists and 12 digs.
 
McKayla Young (North Carolina Central) had 19 kills and hit .600 against Norfolk State.
