MEAC Releases Men’s Basketball Weekly Honors, presented by Coca-Cola

NORFOLK, Va., November 23, 2021Junior guard Christian Ings of Norfolk State has been named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, it was announced on Tuesday. Meanwhile, redshirt junior forward Tyree Corbett of Coppin State and freshman guard Elijah Hawkins of Howard have been named MEAC Defensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively.
 
Ings (G, 6-2, 185, Jr. Philadelphia, Pa.) led the Spartans to a 2-1 week while posting averages of 18.3 points, 3.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.3 steals. In the Spartans’ first-ever win over William and Mary (91-74), he scored a career-high 31 points on 12-for-15 shooting from the floor, 2-for-3 shooting from 3-point range and 5-for-5 shooting from the free throw line. He also had four rebounds, four assists and two steals in that contest.
 
Corbett (F, 6-7, 180, r-Jr., Philadelphia, Pa.) averaged 10.3 rebounds and 1.7 blocks on the defensive end while adding averages of 11.0 points and 1.0 assists offensively as the Eagles defeated Loyola-Maryland before falling to Virginia and Cleveland State. He had a 15-point, 13-rebound double-double versus Loyola-Maryland as well as a 13-point, 13-rebound effort against Cleveland State.
 
Hawkins (G, 5-11, 160, Fr., Washington, D.C.) captured MEAC Rookie of the Week accolades for a second straight week after averaging 12.0 points, 9.3 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 1.3 steals as the Bison defeated William & Mary after falling to Villanova and High Point. He had double-doubles of 16 points and 11 assists in the Villanova contest along with 12 points and 11 assists against William & Mary.
 
Other Top Performers
Jesse Zarzuela (Coppin State) averaged 10.0 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists in a 1-3 week that saw the Eagles defeat Loyola-Maryland for their first victory of the season.
 
Myles Carter (Delaware State) recorded a double-double with game highs of 23 points and 10 rebounds against UNC Wilmington.
 
Corey Perkins (Delaware State) averaged 11.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 2.5 rebounds as the Hornets went 2-2 during the week.
 
Steve Settle (Howard) averaged 17.7 points and 4.0 rebounds in a week that saw him tally 13 points against No. 5 Villanova along with 21 points against High Point and 19 against William & Mary.
 
Zion Styles (Maryland Eastern Shore) scored 19 points and grabbed five rebounds in a win over Fordham.
 
Sherwyn Devonish (Morgan State) averaged 10.7 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.3 assists during the week, including 16 points against Seattle and 14 against Portland.
 
Marque Maultsby (North Carolina Central) averaged 9.5 points and 6.0 rebounds during the week, including 12 points with eight rebounds against Iowa.
 
Randy Miller Jr. (North Carolina Central) scored a career-high 23 points in an overtime loss to Alabama State. He also had five rebounds in that contest.
