WASHINGTON, D.C., Nov. 19, 2021 – If there’s such a thing as a comeback sweep, it happened Friday.
Coppin State was up 2-0 in its quarterfinal match against Norfolk State, but fell behind 10-1 in the third set. But the third-seeded Eagles stormed back to take a 3-0 (25-21, 25-12, 25-21) win in the 2021 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Championship in Burr Gymnasium.
The Eagles (16-11) advanced to Saturday’s 8 p.m. semifinal against Delaware State.
Paola Caten led the way with 13 kills, while MEAC Player of the Year Miajavon Coleman added 11 kills and a match-high 20 digs. Chudear Tut was the third Eagle in double figures in kills with 10. Andres Tsvetanova had 30 assists.
Ashley Roman, the MEAC Defensive Player of the Year, had 15 digs.
After a tight first set – which Norfolk State led 17-16 at one point – the Eagles closed the set on a 9-4 run to go up 1-0 in the match. Coppin then took that momentum into the second set, which it led by as many as 13 points en route to taking a 2-0 lead.
Norfolk State appeared to bounce back, opening the third set on a 10-1 run and leading 16-7 after a kill from Caris Cross. But the Eagles started clawing their way back, going on a 9-2 run to cut the lead to 18-16 on an Ahzhi Coleman kill.
That momentum continued, even though the Spartans took a 21-20 lead. But Coppin scored the last five points, completing the comeback – and the sweep – on a kill from Caten.
If the Eagles win on Saturday, they’ll be making their second straight appearance in the championship match.
Shonte Seale led the Spartans (7-17) with eight kills.
