MEAC Announces Weekly Women’s Basketball Honors, presented by Coca-Cola

NORFOLK, Va., Nov. 16, 2021Coppin State graduate guard Jaia Alexander was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, the conference office announced today. Delaware State freshman guard Sianny Sanchez-Oliver was named Rookie of the Week, while Coppin State redshirt freshman forward Colleen Bucknor earned Defensive Player of the Week honors.
 
Alexander (5-11, Gr., G, Baltimore, Md.) averaged 24.0 points and 7.3 rebounds in helping the Eagles open the season 2-1 this past week, notching wins over La Salle and William & Mary. She was a combined 24-for-53 (45.0 percent) from the floor and 22-for-25 (88.0 percent) from the free throw line. After dropping 30 points on 10-for-18 shooting and a perfect 9-for-9 at the free throw line in the season opener against La Salle, Alexander added 19 points and eight boards against William & Mary before ending the week with her first double-double of the season, a 23-point, 10-rebound effort against Rhode Island.
 
Sanchez-Oliver (5-5, Fr., G, Powder Springs, Ga.) opened her collegiate career with back-to-back double-digit scoring efforts for the Hornets. She hit six of her eight shots in her debut against Stony Brook, scoring 13 points to go along with four assists and three rebounds, before adding 10 points, four rebounds and a steal on 4-for-9 shooting against Hampton. For the week, Sanchez-Oliver averaged 11.5 points a contest.
 
Bucknor (5-11, r-Fr., F, Miami, Fla.) averaged 7.7 rebounds per game as Coppin State opened the season with wins over La Salle and William & Mary. She grabbed eight boards – seven on the defensive end – in the opener against La Salle, and she had seven more rebounds against William & Mary. The Rhode Island contest was her most well-rounded defensive effort of the young season; Bucknor grabbed eight rebounds – all defensive – to go along with a pair of blocked shots and a steal.
 
Other Top Performers
Jewel Watkins (Coppin State) had seven points and four rebounds against Rhode Island.
 
Iyanna Warren (Howard) dropped 19 points against North Texas.
 
Brooklyn Bailey (Maryland Eastern Shore) scored 18 points and hit five 3-pointers against Claflin.
 
Bairesha Gill-Miles (Maryland Eastern Shore) scored 17 points on 8-for-11 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds against Claflin.
 
Adia Brisker (Morgan State) dropped 22 points and grabbed three steals against Stanford.
 
Tatiana Jones (Norfolk State) opened the season with 16 points and eight rebounds in a win over Chowan, before scoring 11 points and grabbing seven rebounds against Ohio State.
 
Ashlyn Lockard (North Carolina Central) had 13 points and seven boards against Appalachian State, as well as 11 points and eight rebounds against Illinois.
 
Trinity Klock (South Carolina State) opened with a double-double (19 points, 11 rebounds) against Old Dominion, before dropping 14 points and grabbing eight boards against Coastal Carolina.
