MEAC Announces 2021-22 Women’s Basketball Preseason Honors, presented by TowneBank

2021-22 MEAC Basketball Coaches Preseason Video Conference


NORFOLK, Va.,
Oct. 21, 2021 – Morgan State graduate forward Dahnye Redd was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women’s Basketball Preseason Player of the Year, presented by TowneBank, the conference announced today. In addition, Howard was selected as the preseason favorite to win the MEAC.
 
All awards were voted on by the conference’s head coaches and sports information directors.
 
Redd, a First Team All-MEAC honoree from last season, ranked sixth in the MEAC in scoring (13.5 ppg) and rebounding (7.3 rpg) last season, and she was seventh in the league in free throw percentage (773) and eighth in field goal percentage (.403).
 
She also ranked fifth in the MEAC in offensive rebounds (3.1 per game). 2020-21 also saw Redd score in double figures 11 times in 15 games, including a pair of 20-game efforts and two double-doubles.  In MEAC play, Redd was fifth in field goal percentage (.400), seventh in scoring (12.5 ppg) and ninth in rebounding (6.9 rpg).

Howard, which advanced to the championship game of the 2021 Air Force Reserve MEAC Basketball Tournament, was selected as the preseason favorite, racking up eight of a possible 16 first-place votes and notching 113 points. Morgan State was picked second with four first-place votes and 108 points, followed by Norfolk State and North Carolina Central.
 
Maryland Eastern Shore (two first-place votes), Coppin State (two first-place votes), Delaware State and South Carolina State rounded out the predicted order of finish poll.
 
Joining Redd on the Preseason All-MEAC First Team are Coppin State’s Aliyah Lwason, Howard’s Anzhane’ Hutton and Morgan State’s Ja’Niah Henson and Asia McCalla.
 
The 2022 MEAC Basketball Tournament will be held March 9-12 at the Norfolk Scope Arena in Norfolk, Va.
