Howard 22, Sacred Heart 17

WASHINGTON (October 2, 2021) – Third-year quarterback Quinton Williams (Upper Marlboro, Md.) threw for three touchdowns--including the game winner--and the defense turned in its best performance of the season as the Howard University football team came from behind to defeat Sacred Heart University, 22-17, in a nonconference game before 5,235 at William H. Greene Stadium.

It was the first victory of the season for the Bison (1-4, 0-0 in the MEAC) while the Pioneers dropped to 2-3 (0-1 in the NEC).

"We talked all week about this being a four-quarter game," said Howard head coach Larry Scott, who earned his first victory with the Bison. "We had to grind it out. We have been competing but have not been able to close out games. The defense played well, the offense capitalized when they had to, and the special teams all contributed to this team victory."

In addition to his passing success, Williams was able to make some timely plays with 35 yards on the ground.

Delaware State 33, Wagner 27 (2OT)

Staten Island, N.Y. (Oct. 2, 2021) --- Delaware State overcame an early 14-point deficit and some late game frustrations to rally for a 33-27 double-overtime victory at Wagner on Saturday.

The Hornets scored the game-winning points on a 17-yard touchdown pass from Jared Lewis to Trey Gross on DSU’s second overtime possession. Delaware State failed to connect on the required two-point attempt after the touchdown.

On Wagner’s second overtime possession, the Hornets were slapped with a pass interference penalty on a second-and-19 play for the Seahawks, giving the home team a first down at the DSU 14. The Delaware State defense overcame the penalty by holding Wagner to minus-two yards on the next four plays, including a fourth down sack by defensive back Andrew Reese, setting off a celebration on the DSU sideline.

The score was 27-27 at the end of regulation.

The Hornet defense also came up big on the first overtime possession when Esaias Guthrie intercepted his fourth pass of the season to keep Wagner off the board.

Lewis completed 16 of 26 passes for 169 yards and a career-high four touchdowns.

Delaware State snapped a three-game skid to improve to 2-2 this season, while Wagner fell to 0-5. The Hornets also defeated a non-conference FCS opponent for the first time since a 2011 win at VMI, a string of 15 games.
