NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State head men's basketball coach Robert Jones was named one of 40 Rising Head Coaches by Silver Waves Media on Thursday.

The media organization honored up-and-coming coaches at the NCAA Division I level who are candidates for bigger jobs.

Jones is currently in his eighth season as head coach at NSU. He owns a 129-114 overall record, including 84-28 (.750 win percentage) in MEAC play. Among head coaches with at least five years at their current school, he stands fifth in the nation in conference win percentage. The Spartans have finished no worse than 11-5 and tied for fourth in the MEAC standings during his tenure.

The 2019 MEAC Coach of the Year has led NSU to five postseason berths in the six seasons that postseason was played. The 2018-19 squad captured the MEAC regular season title at 14-2 and defeated No. 1 seed Alabama in the NIT first round.

The full list of the top 40 coaches can be viewed at www.SilverWavesMedia.com. To be considered, coaches must not have been a head coach previously in one of the power six conferences, must have at least two years completed at their current school, and must be willing to rise as a coach. Coaches who fit the criteria and have a resume that puts them in contention of earning a bigger job made the list.

Jones was one of three MEAC coaches to be honored along with Will Jones of North Carolina A&T and LeVelle Moton of North Carolina Central.

NSU, sporting a 4-3 overall record, returns to action this weekend with a pair of games against Morgan State at home to begin conference play. Both games will begin at 2 p.m. this Saturday and Sunday at Joseph Echols Hall and will be streamed live on FloHoops.
