VIDEO: Willie Mack III's Near Ace at No. 8
It was a tough finish for Willie Mack III in his PGA TOUR debut Thursday at the Farmers Insurance Open.
Three consecutive bogeys sent the Bethune-Cookman product to a 2-over par 74 and tie for 117
th to conclude his opening round at Torrey Pines Golf Course.
The Flint, Mich. native needs to finish Friday's second round in 65
th place or better to make the cut. After playing Thursday on Torrey Pines' fame long South Course, Mack will play the shorter North Course in Friday.
A promising start that including a near ace on the par-3 8
th hole left Mack at one under after 14.
"An exciting day. It (the round) was good until 15," Mack said in his Golf Channel interview. "Just some stupid mistakes. Weather is supposed to be bad tomorrow, but I think I can manage something. I have one more day to get things back on track."
He three-putted 15, came up four inches short on 16, and a par putt at 17 after a strong bunker shot lipped out before he finished the day with a par on 18.
On the front nine, Mack recovered from a fourth hole bogey with an approach shot that left him two feet from the hole on five, setting up an easy birdie.
Patrick Reed and Alex Noren lead the event with an eight-under 64.
Mack is scheduled for a 2 p.m. EST (11 a.m. local) tee time on Friday.
