MEAC Announces Weekly Men’s Basketball Honors, presented by Coca-Cola

NORFOLK, Va., Jan. 26, 2021 — Junior guard De’Torrion Ware of Morgan State University has been tabbed Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, it was announced on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Coppin State University’s redshirt senior guard Anthony Tarke and redshirt freshman forward Kenan Sarvan have been named Defensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively.
 
Ware (G, 6-4, 200, Jr., Hopkinsville, Ky.) was red hot in wins over St. Mary’s and Delaware State, hitting 21 of 33 shots from the field (63.6%), nine of 16 shots from 3-point range (56.3%) and all eight shots from the free throw line (100%), averaging 29.5 points in the process. He came off the bench against the Hornets on Sunday and exploded for a career-high 36 points with four rebounds, two assists, two steals and a blocked shot.
 
Tarke (G, 6-6, 220, r-Sr., Gaithersburg, Md.) averaged 9.5 rebounds, 2.5 blocked shots and 1.5 steals on the defensive end in a pair of victories over Norfolk State over the weekend, while averaging 12.5 points and 4.0 assists offensively. In Sunday’s victory over the Spartans, he had a 13-point, 11-rebound double-double. It is Tarke’s fourth straight week capturing MEAC Defensive Player of the Week honors and sixth time overall so far this season.
 
Sarvan (F, 6-10, 225, r-Fr., Heeze, Netherlands) averaged 10.0 points and 6.5 rebounds to help Coppin State top Norfolk State twice in their series over the weekend. His 14 points and nine rebounds in Saturday’s win are both career highs, and he has now won MEAC Rookie of the Week honors three times so far this season.
 
Other Top Performers
DeJuan Clayton (Coppin State)
 posted averages of 21.5 points, 7.5 assists and 4.0 rebounds as the Eagles snapped a 14-game losing streak to Norfolk State. He had 22 points and nine rebounds in Sunday’s contest against the Spartans after totaling 20 points, seven rebounds and six assists in Saturday’s meeting, a game in which he went 10-for-10 at the free throw line.
 
Malik Miller (Morgan State) finished with his fourth double-double of the season by recording 16 points and 11 rebounds in the Bears’ win against St. Mary’s College of Maryland. That was followed by a win over Delaware State in which he netted 15 points with six rebounds, six assists and four steals.
 
Joe Bryant (Norfolk State) had a 21-point outburst in the Spartans’ loss to Coppin State on Saturday, going 8-for-16 from the floor and 5-for-5 from the charity stripe. In the two contests against the Eagles, he averaged 12.5 points, 3.0 assists and 2.5 rebounds.
 
J.J. Matthews (Norfolk State) averaged 8.0 rebounds in losses to Coppin State on Saturday and Sunday.
