Hornets Score Big Academically in Fall 2020 Term

DOVER, Del., Jan. 12, 2021 -- Delaware State's student-athletes continued to soar in the classroom during the fall 2020 semester. According to university academic reports, Hornet athletes posted a combined grade-point-average of 3.17 (on a 4.0 scale) for the fall 2020 term and an overall cumulative GPA of 3.20.

Among the report's highlights, 12 of the Hornets' 18 athletics programs recorded a team GPA of 3.0 or higher during the Fall term. Six teams posted grade point averages of 3.5 or higher, led by women's tennis at 3.68. Women's bowling was second at 3.59, followed by women's volleyball (3.56), soccer (3.54), and women's lacrosse and women's golf tying at 3.50 to round out the top five.

Of the Fall 2020 GPAs, 10 Delaware State programs achieved a mark of 3.0 or higher. Bowling was tops with a 3.63 grade-point-average through the most recent semester. In addition to bowling, volleyball (3.57), Tennis (3.56) and lacrosse (3.53) also topped the 3.50 team GPA score. 

Among the Hornets' men's programs, the football team had the top Fall 2020 grade point average at 2.91, while football, men's track & field, and basketball are tied for the top men's cumulative GPA through the last semester at 2.99.    

Individually, 44% of Delaware State student-athletes (168 of 427) posted a grade-point-average of 3.5-or-higher during the Fall 2020 term, while 35% (150) had GPAs of 3.5-or-higher through the most recent semester.  

Sixty-five athletes (15%) achieved a perfect 4.0 grade-point-average in the Fall to earn President's List recognition, while 169 received Dean's List honors with GPAs of 3.25-to-3.99.

Fifteen percent of Delaware State's student-athlete population (64) had a term GPA of 3.0 to 3.24 for the fall 2020 semester.

"This is a wonderful achievement, particularly as all continue to adapt to on-line course delivery, new work environments and habits, and in the midst of suspended practices and competitions."
