NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State softball team added another player to its roster for the upcoming season, as Radford transfer Cam Andersen will join the Spartans for the 2021 campaign.
A 5-foot-6 pitcher who attended nearby Granby High School, the Norfolk, Va., native arrives at NSU after spending her freshman season at Radford in 2020. Following the NCAA's decision to give all spring sport student-athletes an extra year of eligibility due to COVID-19, Andersen will have up to four years of eligibility with the Spartans.
"Cam is a local success story who brings unbelievable work ethic and a positive attitude to the team," Norfolk State head coach James Inzana, heading into his fourth year with the program, said. "She also brings velocity to the pitching circle and is a threat to go deep every time she steps to the plate. Cam will come in and compete right away, as all our Spartans do, and we are so happy she choose to come back home."
In the shortened 2020 season, Andersen made three appearances in the circle for the Highlanders and played in seven games total. She earned a win after allowing just one hit in five innings in an 8-0 victory over Lafayette on Feb. 29. She allowed three hits and one unearned run in six total innings on the season.
At the plate, Andersen hit 5-for-17 (.294) with six runs, one double, one triple, one home run, three RBI and five walks. She made five starts at DP in addition to her one starting appearance at pitcher.
A two-time All-Tidewater player at Granby HS, Anderson was also named the Eastern District Co-Player of the Year and first-team All-Region 6A her senior year in 2019. She hit .679 while striking out 132 in the circle that season.
She joins a recruiting class that also includes incoming freshmen and twin sisters Kennedy and Kerris Cameron from Texas. Like Anderson, Kennedy Cameron will bolster the Spartans' pitching staff, while Kerris Cameron will give NSU another option behind the plate.
