Morgan State Softball Announces Signing Of Seven for 2021

BALTIMORE, Md., June 11, 2020--Morgan State head softball coach Larry Hineline has announced the addition of seven signees for the 2021 season.
 
Joining the Lady Bears this fall will be Kayla Bates, Madison Bolyea, Annissa Dorres, Mia Ewell, Emily Raubuch, Sarah Tuzinski and Leah Victor.
 
Morgan State finished the shortened 2020 campaign with a 5-11 overall record, including 3-1 at home, before the season came to an end due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Lady Bears would win three of their final four games, including a 16-4 victory in five innings in a non-conference game against visiting Maryland Eastern Shore (3/8) in the finale of the Bear Invitational. It would be the final game of the season.

#20 Kayla Bates
Position: Shortstop/ Outfield
High School: Nicolet (Glendale, WI) High School
Hometown: Milwaukee, Wis.
Major: Architecture
  • Was a 2020 Division 1 Senior Wisconsin Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association All-Star.
  • Named North Shore Conference Co-Player of the Year as a junior in 2019.
  • Earned All-North Shore Conference honors from 2017-2019.
  • Named second-team All-State as a junior.
  • Received first-team All-District honors in 2019.
  • Named to the All-Suburban Team in 2018.
  • Her grandfather played baseball in the Negro League and Major League.
  • Was also a four-year starter on the Nicolet High basketball team.
  • Plays both the piano and the bass.
  • Favorite player is Sis Bates.
Coach Hineline on Kayla: "Kayla is an accomplished switch-hitter from Wisconsin that brings a ton of versatility, speed and athletic ability to the team. She will be a presence on the bases and put pressure on opposing defenses from day one."
 
 
#97 Madison Bolyea
Position: Infielder
High School: Eastview Secondary School
Hometown: Barrie, Ontario
Major: Architecture 
  • Was named team rookie of the year.
  • Garnered offensive MVP honors as a junior.
  • During her junior season she helped her team capture the gold medal at the U16 Pony National Championship.
  • Earned a silver medal as a sophomore at the U16 Canadian Championships.
  • Played the piano for 10 years and received a medal for excellence.
  • Played travel ball with incoming Morgan freshman Leah Victor.
Coach Hineline on Madison: "Madi brings a strong left-handed bat with power to our team all the way from her native Canada. She will complete for playing time at first base and is deceptively fast on the base paths."


#24 Annissa Dorres
Position: Catcher
High School: Redland East Valley High School
Hometown: Redlands, Calif.
Major: Biology
  • Maintained an Honor Roll standing from 2016-2019.
  • Was a scholar-athlete from 2017-2019
  • Received the Coach's Award in 2018.
  • Helped Redland East Valley High to a California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Southern Section Division 3 championship appearance in 2018.
  • Team reached the CIF playoffs from 2016-2019.
  • Was a member of the 2020 JV swim team.
  • Enjoys singing and music.
  • A fan of the movie Nacho Libre
  • Her high school recently produced numerous D1 catchers, including Sahvanna Jaquish (LSU), Amanda Carey (Fordham), Autumn Gillespie (Ole Miss), and Samantha Carson (Towson).
Coach Hineline on Annissa: "Annissa comes to us from the softball hotbed of Southern California and is a strong defensive catcher with a lot of pop in her bat."
 
 
#00 Mia Ewell
Position: Shortstop
High School: Grant High School
Hometown: Portland, Ore.
Major: Health Related Fields
  • Received first-team All-Portland Interscholastic League honors from 2017-2019.
  • Named second-team Class 6A All-State in 2017.
  • Was an honorable mention Class 6A All-State player in 2018.
  • Earned Team MVP honors from 2018-19.
  • Also played guard on the Grant High School basketball team.
  • Is the sister of MSU senior outfielder Aliya Ewell.
  • Her older sister Pokey also played college softball.
  • Her older brother Grant was an All-League high school running back.
Coach Hineline on Mia: "Mia is a talented left-handed hitter from Portland, Oregon, who will be joining her sister on the team. She runs the bases extremely well and has strong instincts for the game."
 
 
#17 Emily Raubuch
Position: Pitcher
High School: Milan High School
Hometown: Milan, Mich.
Major: Business
  • Was a three-time All-District Team selection from her freshman through junior seasons.
  • Named to the All-Region Team as a sophomore and junior.
  • Helped Milan to back-to-back district titles as a freshman and sophomore.
  • Garnered first-team All-Huron League honors as a sophomore.
  • Earned second-team All-Huron League honors as a junior.
  • Received the school's scholar-athlete award as a sophomore and junior.
  • Ran a youth softball camp at her high school.
  • Earned a black belt in karate at the age of nine.
Coach Hineline on Emily: "Emily is a decorated pitcher from Michigan that has one of the smoothest deliveries from the circle that I have ever seen. She moves the ball well and will add a left-handed arm to the pitching staff."
 
 
#32 Sarah Tuzinski
Position: Pitcher/Utility
High School: Hanover Area High School
Hometown: Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
Major: Elementary Education
  • Was the Wyoming Valley Conference (WVC) Division 3 Player of the Year as a junior.
  • Earned WVC Division 3 first team honors as a sophomore.
  • Reached the 300 strikeout mark during her junior season.
  • Attended the same high school as current MSU Lady Bear, Haylee Bobos.
  • She once pitched in a double no-hitter vs. Wyoming Seminary.
  • Struck out 18 batters over eight innings vs. Northwest H.S.
  • Her older sisters Danielle and Nicole also played softball.
Coach Hineline on Sarah: "Sarah is the latest in a long line of Morgan players from Northeast Pennsylvania and is a versatile addition to this recruiting class. She is a good pitcher and hitter and is the type of player that we can play anywhere."
 
 
#12 Leah Victor
Position: Pitcher/Outfielder
High School: Clarence High School
Hometown: Clarence Center, N.Y.
Major: Accounting
  • Was a four-year starter and served as team captain while at Clarence High.
  • Named to the All-Western New York Large Schools first team as a junior.
  • Was a Class AA fifth-team All-State selection as a junior.
  • Received first-team ECIC I/ECIC Large School accolades.
  • Enjoys the pressure of a close game.
  • Has thrown a no-hitter.
  • Pitched her travel ball team to the gold medal win at the U16 Pony National Championship.
  • Played travel ball with incoming Morgan freshman Madison Bolyea.
Coach Hineline on Leah: "Leah is an accomplished pitcher with all the credentials. She is a tall, strong, hard throwing right-handed pitcher from upstate New York, who is a proven winner. She also hits the ball with authority."
