Where were you when the news dropped about all sports being canceled for the rest of the year?
I was in my dorm room when my coach called. I was waiting for my coach's phone call because our weekend tournament had just been canceled. He called me and broke the news that our season was canceled for the rest of the year.
What was the anticipation like as you awaited the phone call?
I was a nervous wreck waiting those few hours. Trying to take my mind off it by watching Netflix or listening to music. I called my mom and she calmed me down and was there supporting me.
What were some things your mom said to calm you down?
It was difficult because she was across the country in California trying to comfort me in a unique situation. My mom basically assured me that everything was going to be okay and just to stay positive.
Once coach broke the news to you, how did you feel? What was your initial reaction?
I was initially in shock and couldn't believe that our season had come to an end before it really started. I was devastated to say the least. I've dedicated my whole life to softball, so for it to end so abruptly it felt so unfair. I was ready for my last season and excited for my senior day and creating lifelong memories with my teammates. It just feels like something that I've been looking forward to not only for me but for my parents as well was taken away.
What do you miss the most with the season being taken away so abruptly?
I miss my teammates and being able to see them every day. Our team is really funny, and I just miss the jokes we had and being able to laugh and enjoy our practices and games. I miss (not having) our senior day as I have been looking forward to that since freshman year and being able to share those moments with my parents. I also felt like we had a really great chance of making it to the championship game for the MEAC tournament.
I believe you and Jordan are the only two seniors on the team. Have y'all spoke at all about the possibility of returning for one more season?
Yes, I can only speak for myself, but I do have plans to come back for my last season. I plan on pursing my Master's, I'm a Nursing and (I want) to be able to finish my senior season on my terms.
After a traumatic experience like this how will you approach your 'second' senior season?
I will definitely enjoy and cherish every second I have on and off the field. People always say play like it's your last game and it's true. I will give the game everything I have and just have fun.
How can this young team still develop despite the season being cut short? And what role do you play/if any in helping them grow as student-athletes?
I think that our team can develop by still putting the work in on their own. Believing in themselves and trusting each other and holding each other accountable. It's difficult, it's not going to be easy but that's what separates you from being mediocre to being an elite athlete. My role would be to help the younger girls grow mentally and building their confidence, as softball is such a mental game. I would love to help build that and of course the physicality of it as well.
Are you still able to train despite the quarantine?
Yes, it's been difficult trying to improvise my workouts. I have been running and trying to keep in shape and trying different workouts to see what I like best. I started doing yoga and I really love that so far.
Speaking of keeping everyone accountable, has the team stayed in touch with each other throughout the lockdown? And has anybody on the team stepped up to make sure everyone is doing well not only physically but also mentally?
Yes, we have a group chat and keep in touch. I know we use social media and FaceTime as well. It's been a challenge since everyone has been focusing on school and adjusting to that. The time difference has been difficult as well as we have girls from all over.
How are you able to stay focused on your studies during such a stressful time?
I have a goal to become a nurse and that has kept me on track. Luckily I have a great support system. It's been difficult but I know I need to study and put the time and effort in so I can become a nurse and help others in the future.
Any concerns about the possibility of not being able to finish your classes this semester?
No, I'm not concerned as the nursing program has adjusted and adapted well enough for us to meet our graduation requirements.
Obviously, you guys won't have a traditional graduation ceremony, but how will you celebrate getting your bachelor's degree?
I will celebrate with my parents and siblings. I wish I could have a big party with my whole family as I have a huge family to celebrate. Hopefully when this is over soon, we can all get together and celebrate this accomplishment.
Jasmine Melgoza's return to the Hornets softball team is terrific for the rebuilding program, She is a very talented second baseman. Melgoza has been selected to the All-MEAC First team two times in her career. She also was an All-MEAC Second team selection during her freshman campaign.
