South Carolina State: Did You Know?

1979 – The South Carolina State women basketball team captured the Division II AIAW (Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women) National Basketball Championship with a 72-67 triumph over Dayton at North Dakota State, Fargo, N.D.

Lady Bulldog guard Roberta Williams was named MVP.

Williams, who was a two-time All-American at S.C. State during her playing days (1976-80), was a second-round pick of the WBL's San Francisco Pioneers and 19th overall selection in 1980. The WBL was the first professional women's basketball league in the U.S. and spanned three seasons (1979-81).

Williams, a Charleston, S.C. native, is the Lady Bulldogs' all-time leading scorer, having scored over 2,200 points, and is the only basketball player -- men or women -- to have had their jersey (No. 11) retired. She is currently inducted into several Hall of Fames to date.
