NORFOLK, Va., March 4, 2020—
North Carolina Central sophomore Thanos Spyropoulos was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, the conference office announced today.
South Carolina State junior Zainab Bendahhou was named Women’s Player of the Week, while
teammate Lajla Cemalovic earned Rookie of the Week honors.
Spyropoulos (So., Athens, Greece) went 4-0 in a pair of dual matches playing atop NCCU's lineup in both singles and doubles action. He defeated No. 1's from Loyola University (Md.) (Skyler Gates, 6-1, 6-4), and Howard (Romani Mayers, 7-5, 6-4) as the Eagles won both road matches. He also partnered with classmate Christos Dagklis for 6-3 and 6-1 top doubles wins against the Greyhounds and Bison, respectively.
Bendahhou (Jr., Morocco) defeated Elessa Jacobs at the No. 6 singles spot to lead South Carolina State to its second straight victory in a 4-1 win over Towson on Saturday. She also paired with Lajla Cemalovic for a 6-4 doubles win.
Cemalovic (Fr., Bosnia/Herzegovina) defeated Lauyrn Jacobs at the No. 5 singles spot in the Lady Bulldogs’ 4-1 victory over Towson on Saturday. She also paired with Bendahhou for a doubles win over Phobe Collins and Elessa Jacobs.
Other Top Performers
Cem Erturk (MSU) won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles to clinch the match against La Salle, while also winning the doubles point.
