NORFOLK, Va., March 15, 2020—Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) junior Samantha Johnson was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Bowler of the Week, the conference office announced. Norfolk State’s Chanel Staton was named Rookie of the Week.
Johnson (Jr., Apopka, Fla.) finished third in the Music City Classic hosted by Vanderbilt, making the All-Tournament Team. She averaged 225 pins in traditional play, racking up for games of 200 or better – including a weekend-best 257.
Staton (Fr., Chesapeake, Va.) averaged 190.5 in five traditional games at the TBNA HBCU Invitational, the 12th-highest average in the tournament. Her high for the weekend was a 210.
Other Top Performers
Kaylah Castillo (CSU) was fourth at the TBNA HBCU Invitational, earning All-Tournament honors after averaging 198.6 pins.
Demetria Bethel, Chelsie Cleaves, Bethany Noel (FAMU) each averaged 199.8 to sit atop the individual standings at the TBNA HBCU Invitational, sharing MVP honors.
Saige Yamada (MON) was fifth in the Northeast Roundup, averaging 221.4 pins and bowling a career-best 267.
Crystal Brewer (NSU) bowled a career-best 239 and was seventh in the TBNA HBCU Invitational.
