ATHENS, Ga. (February 7, 2020) – Howard University softball team opened its 2020 campaign with a pair of losses against UNC Wilmington (UNCW), 3-11 (f/6), and No. 17 Georgia (UGA), 1-11 (f/5).
In game one, HU (0-2) committed seven fielding errors that allowed the Seahawks to score seven unearned runs.
Howard trailed, 0-9, after four innings, but tallied three runs in the fifth to pull within six, 3-9. Bottom six saw the contest end early due to a pair of runs by UNCW, 3-11.
Junior outfielder
Breanna Robinson (Buena Park, Calif.) went 2-of-3 with two singles while newcomer
Te'La Beard (Bakersfield, Calif.) walked three times in the loss.
In the nightcap, HU faced nationally ranked Georgia where they were held to one hit. Third-year outfielder
Trinity Gibbs (Kissimmee, Fla.) delivered a two-out double down the right field line to avoid the no-hitter.
Howard pounced on the Bulldogs early, capitalizing on a passed ball that scored Beard, 1-0. From that point, UGA responded with 11 unanswered runs and ended the game in five.
The weekend continues with two more matchups Saturday (Feb. 8). In the morning, HU squares off against Kent State at 10:30 a.m., followed by a 6 p.m. start in a rematch against UNCW.
