NORFOLK, Va., Feb. 7, 2020 -- With a little more than a month before the 2020 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Basketball Tournament, things are getting tight at the top of the standings in women's basketball, with ties for both the top spot and third place.
Following this past weekend's action, Norfolk State and defending tournament champion Bethune-Cookman are tied for first place at 7-1. Defending regular-season champion North Carolina A&T State -- which handed the Spartans their first conference loss of the season this past Saturday -- and Morgan State are tied for third at 7-2.
Delaware State is currently in fifth at 5-2 in league play.
SATURDAY'S GAMES
Five games are on the docket for Saturday afternoon -- including the Aggies heading down to Daytona Beach, Fla. to take on Bethune-Cookman in a contest that will be shown live on FloHoops. The Lady Wildcats won the first match-up between the two teams in Greensboro, N.C.
Morgan State will return home, looking to continue its winning ways against Maryland Eastern Shore, and Delaware State will hit the road for a test against Norfolk State. Howard will head to Florida A&M and North Carolina Central will head north to face Coppin State.
MONDAY'S GAMES
Morgan State will play host to North Carolina Central, while North Carolina A&T State will wrap up its Florida swing against Florida A&M. Howard will pay Bethune-Cookman a visit, and Delaware State will be in Orangeburg, S.C. to take on South Carolina State.
Maryland Eastern Shore will wrap up its Baltimore swing against Coppin State.
THIS PAST WEEK
Bethune-Cookman's Kiana Williams and Morgan State's Chelsea Mitchell were named MEAC Co-Players of the Week for their respective performances this past weekend, while Florida A&M's Kayla Massop was named Rookie of the Week for the first time this season.
Mitchell also shared Defensive Player of the Week honors with Coppin State's Chance Graham.
MILESTONES & HIGHLIGHTS
Norfolk State's Chanette Hicks continues to rank among the NCAA's best in several statistical categories. She is second in steals per game and total steals, third in field goals made and triple-doubles, seventh in points per game and field goal attempts and 13th in total points.
She also ranks 18th in free throw attempts, 38th in assists per game and 44th in total assists.
Mitchell leads the MEAC and ranks 25th in the nation with 10 double-doubles so far this season -- including her 26-point, 14-rebound performance this past Saturday against Howard. She also has eight steals in that game, and she is third in the nation in both total steals and steals per game.
Mitchell also ranks sixth nationally in offensive rebounds per game, 35th in total rebounds and 50th in rebounds per game.
Graham is now eighth in MEAC history in career rebounds with 1,098. She is second in the conference this season with nine double-doubles, and she ranks 14th in the nation in defensive rebounds per game, 33rd in double-doubles and 41st in total rebounds.
Howard's Jayla Thornton is fifth in the nation in 3-point attempts, 14th in total threes made and 18th in threes per game.
Jacquece Alston of South Carolina State is 33rd in the nation in total steals.
