MEAC Men’s Hoops: Aggies Have Vaulted to the Top

NORFOLK, Va., Feb. 7, 2020--
The grind of conference play continues with several key games coming up this week, including two on FloHoops.
 
SATURDAY’S SLATE
After snapping Norfolk State’s six-game conference winning streak in the lone meeting of the season between the two schools, a surging North Carolina A&T State takes over the No. 1 spot in the conference (8-1). Winners of five straight, the Aggies will travel to Daytona Beach, Fla. to take on Bethune-Cookman on Saturday.
 
After seeing their six-game winning streak snapped and dropping into third place following losses to North Carolina A&T State and North Carolina Central, Norfolk State will look to rebound at home against Delaware State.
 
Howard will visit Florida A&M in the first game of the Bison’s Florida trip. After handing Norfolk State its second straight loss, North Carolina Central will visit Baltimore, Md. to face Coppin State. The game will be streamed on FloHoops with tip-off at 4 p.m.
 
Having won three straight, Morgan State will host in-state foe Maryland Eastern Shore.
 
MONDAY’S GAMES
On Monday, Morgan State will welcome North Carolina Central to the Hill Field House, where the Bears (6-3) will square off with the second-place Eagles (5-2). After a slow start to the season, the Eagles have regrouped to win three straight games and seven of their last 10. The game will be streamed on FloHoops at 7:30 p.m.
 
Delaware State will wrap up its road trip against South Carolina State and Maryland Eastern Shore will conclude its trip through Baltimore against Coppin State. Howard and North Carolina A&T State will complete their trips through Florida against Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M, respectively.
 
AROUND THE MEAC
North Carolina Central’s C.J. Keyser was named MEAC Player of the Week. North Carolina A&T’s Ronald Jackson was named MEAC Defensive Player of the Week and Norfolk State’s Tyrese Jenkins was named MEAC Rookie of the Week for the second time in three weeks.
 
MILESTONES
Coppin State’s Andrew Robinson knocked down a career-high six treys against Delaware State.
 
Florida A&M beat Bethune-Cookman at home for the first time since the 2012-13 season.
 
Howard’s CJ Williams continues to chip away at the MEAC all-time scoring record. He scored 38 points over the weekend against Morgan State and Coppin State. He now has scored 2,235 career points, leaving him just 40 points behind the record (held by Delaware State’s Tom Davis).
 
Kameron Langley of North Carolina A&T State has 549 career assists after this past weekend, leaving him 33 shy of the program record and 74 from tying the MEAC all-time record.
 
North Carolina Central’s Jibri Blount has scored in double figures in 17 consecutive games.
 
Delaware State’s Pinky Wiley poured in a season-high 25 points in the win over Coppin State. Myles Carter had a career-high 17 points.
 
North Carolina Central’s CJ Keyser scored a career-high 23 points in back-to-back games as the Eagles defeated South Carolina State and Norfolk State.
 
Jordan Perkins had a game-high seven assists to along with six points and four boards against South Carolina State. He now has 421 assists during his time in Durham, which is the second most in school history behind Emanuel Chapman (617).
 
North Carolina Central’s 15-point comeback win against Norfolk State was the largest deficit the Eagles have overcome in the Div. I era, passing a 13-point comeback against Morgan State for a 53-52 win on Jan. 27, 2014.
