NORFOLK, Va., Feb. 28, 2020--Conference play begins to come down the stretch, with two games on FloHoops this week, the final full weekend of the regular season.
SATURDAY’S GAMES
Second-place North Carolina Central visits South Carolina State and Delaware State visits Maryland Eastern Shore on Saturday. Coppin State will head across town to take on rival Morgan State, and Howard will travel down I-95 and I-64 to face third-place Norfolk State in Echols Hall.
MONDAY’S SCHEDULE
There could be some more shake-up at the top of the standings with the top four teams in action. First-place North Carolina A&T State has won three straight to regain its footing and will visit South Carolina State on Monday. Winners of three straight, fourth-place Bethune-Cookman will take on second-place North Carolina Central in Durham, N.C., where the Eagles remain undefeated at McDougald-McLendon Arena (10-0).
Having lost back-to-back games heading into the weekend, third-place Norfolk State will visit Delaware State, where the Spartans will look to contain John Crosby, the conference’s leading scorer (19.9 points per game). Howard and Maryland Eastern Shore will square off in Washington, D.C.
AROUND THE MEAC
North Carolina Central’s Jibri Blount was named MEAC Player of the Week for the fourth time this season and was also named MEAC Co-Defensive Player of the Week. Along with Blount, Coppin State’s Brendan Medley-Bacon picked up yet another MEAC Defensive Player of the Week Award.
Howard’s Wayne Bristol, Jr. claimed the MEAC Rookie of the Week for the third time.
Coppin State’s Andrew Robinson is fourth in the country in 3-point field goal attempts. His 266 attempts are a new Coppin State single-season record, and he is tied for ninth in the country in 3-point field goals with the fourth-most in Eagles’ single-season history.
North Carolina A&T State’s Kameron Langley leads the nation in triple-doubles; he is the only men’s Div. I player in the country with more than one triple-double on the season.
Langley and Blount rank 20th and 23rd in the country in steals, respectively.
Bethune-Cookman’s Cletrell Pope leads the nation in offensive rebounding (4.5 offensive rebounds per game), is fourth in rebounding (11.9 rebounds per game), and seventh in double-doubles (16).
Florida A&M snapped a 17-game losing streak to Norfolk State this past weekend, a run that dated back to the 2006-07 season. Prior to this past weekend, the Rattlers last beat the Spartans, 81-71 on Jan. 6, 2007.
North Carolina A&T State is looking for its third straight winning season. The Aggies haven’t accomplished the feat since having four straight winning seasons from 1990-94.
North Carolina A&T State has won 25 straight games at Corbett Sports Center.
North Carolina Central has won 15 straight games at McDougald-McLendon Arena.
MILESTONES
Howard’s CJ Williams scored 10 points against North Carolina A&T State to become the MEAC’s all-time leading scorer with 2,282 points. He passed Delaware State’s Tom Davis, who had held the record since 1991.
Coppin State scored 98 points against Delaware State, which was a season-high and the most the Eagles have scored against a Div. I opponent since scoring 108 in a loss to Norfolk State on Jan. 31, 2011.
The Rattlers finished the season 8-0 at the Al Lawson Center, marking the first time FAMU has gone undefeated at home since the 1988-89 campaign.
Langley tied his career-high with 13 assists against Maryland Eastern Shore to break the school record set by Thomas Griffis (583). He is fourth in the nation in assists (7.4 assists per game).
