NORFOLK, Va., Feb. 24, 2020 – Morgan State’s Cayla Sweazie was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Softball Player and Rookie of the Week, the conference announced Monday afternoon. North Carolina A&T State’s Kayla Douglas was selected as Pitcher of the Week for the second week in a row.
 
Sweazie (SS, Fr., Ashburn, Va.) led the Lady Bears with a .455 batting average, going 5-for-11 with four RBIs, three runs and a walk. She began the weekend going 2-for-3 for an average of .667 with a run scored in a win over Stetson. In the win over Oakland, she had an average of .500 and drove in four RBIs after going 2-for-4 with a run scored in the win.
 
Douglas (P, Fr., Charlotte, N.C.) went 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA with six strikeouts and recorded a win against Appalachian State while pitching a complete game and giving up just three earned runs. She also pitched a complete game against Dartmouth, giving up just two unearned runs.
 
OTHER TOP PERFORMERS 
Te’La Beard (HOW) had a .333 batting average over the weekend, including an RBI and a double in three games played.
 
Ayana Sallee (HOW) recorded her first multi-hit performance of the season, going 2-for-3 including a two-run single against Murray State.
 
Stephanie Rundlett (MSU) went 1-2 over the weekend with an ERA of 4.67. She picked up a win over Oakland, recording a 1.00 ERA while throwing six strikeouts in seven innings of work. She finished the weekend with 10 strikeouts, including three against Clemson.
 
Shelby DesChamps (NSU) had a .375 batting average while going 3-for-8 at the plate for the Spartans over the weekend. In the game against Hartford, she was a perfect 2-for-2 from the plate with two runs scored and finished the weekend with three runs scored, four walks and two stolen bases.
 
Imani Moore (NSU) had three hits in 10 attempts with an RBI a double for Norfolk State over the weekend. 
 
Dominique Varela (NCAT) averaged .333 with five hits, four runs scored and two RBIs. She recorded the game-winning RBI against Appalachian State in a game in which she went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs.
