NORFOLK, Va., Feb. 13, 2020--As the second half of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) slate continues, the grind intensifies with a crucial week headlined by a rivalry game on national television.
SATURDAY’S SLATE
On Saturday, Bethune-Cookman visits Maryland Eastern Shore, Coppin State hits the road to face South Carolina State, and fourth-place Morgan State visits third-place Norfolk State. Florida A&M, having won three straight, will wrap up the day by hitting the road to face Delaware State.
MONDAY’S GAMES
Monday’s slate is headlined by the two surging North Carolina teams. North Carolina A&T State welcomes archrival North Carolina Central to Greensboro, N.C. for a game that will be televised on ESPNU, with tip-off set for 7 p.m.
After losing two straight to Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M, the Aggies have slipped to third place in the standings at 8-3. Meanwhile, the Eagles come into the game atop the conference at 8-2, having won five straight games and eight of their last 10.
The Aggies are third in the conference in scoring (70.7 points per game), while the Eagles are the No. 1 scoring defense, giving up just 64.3 points per game. The two schools have split the last six meetings, which have been decided by an average of eight points.
In other action, Bethune-Cookman will visit Delaware State, Morgan State travels to South Carolina State, and Florida A&M will wrap up its road trip against Maryland Eastern Shore.
Norfolk State will host Coppin State to conclude the day.
AROUND THE MEAC
Howard’s Charles Williams scored 37 points over the weekend against Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman. He needs just four points to break Tom Davis’ all-time MEAC record.
Bethune-Cookman’s Cletrell Pope is sixth in the country in rebounding (11.5 rebounds per game), while North Carolina A&T State’s Kameron Langley leads the MEAC in assists and is seventh in the nation (6.8 assists per game).
Florida A&M (6-0) and North Carolina A&T (8-0) remain undefeated at home this season.
North Carolina Central’s Deven Palmer and Bethune-Cookman’s Leon Redd were named MEAC Co-Players of the Week. Coppin State’s Brendan Medley-Bacon was named MEAC Defensive Player of the Week for the third time in four weeks, and Maryland Eastern Shore’s Da’Shawn Phillip was named Rookie of the Week
Medley-Bacon finished with 15 boards and a career-high seven blocks against North Carolina Central. Those seven blocks were the most by a Coppin State player since Michael Thomas blocked eight shots against Howard on Feb. 4, 1995.
Howard’s Nate Garvey scored a career-high 20 points against Florida A&M.
