NORFOLK, Va., Feb. 12, 2020—
Morgan State junior Cem Erturk was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, the conference office announced today.
Bethune-Cookman’s Gerhard Sullwald was named Men’s Rookie of the Week. On the women’s side.
Morgan State sophomore Averiana Mitchell was named Player of the Week and
teammate Ana-Lei Kalawe earned Rookie of the Week honors.
Erturk (Jr., Izmir, Turkey) was a perfect 4-0 for the Bears this past week, winning both his singles and both his doubles matches. He defeated Youngstown State’s Vasilis Vardakis 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 1 singles spot, while also winning his doubles match. He also defeated University of D.C.’s Juan Hernandez 6-2, 6-2 after winning his doubles match on that day.
Sullwald (Fr., South Africa) defeated Johnny Wang of the College of Charleston 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 2 singles position. He also paired with Victor Castro for a 6-1 doubles victory, making him a perfect 2-0 for the weekend.
Mitchell (So., Las Vegas, Nev.) finished a combined 2-0 to help Morgan State defeat No. 17 Harford Community College in its lone match of the week. She defeated Alizee Ripolles 2-6, 6-3, 10-6 in the No. 1 singles position, while also partnering with Asmara Rose to pick up a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles over Ripolles and Teona Urushadze.
Kalawe (Fr., Charleston, S.C.) picked up a straight-set victory at No. 3 singles against Lianna Tillinghast of Harford Community College. She also teamed with Jourdan Wallace at No. 2 doubles to defeat Lianna Tillinghast and Paula Martinez 6-0.
Other Top Performers
Victor Castro (B-CU) defeated College of Charleston’s Ben Cawston 6-1, 7-5, while also earning a doubles win.
Thanos Spyropoulos (NCCU) defeated Kyle Frankel of Elon 7-6 (4), 6-2.
