Pinky Wiley scored a season-high 25 points to lead Delaware State to a 77-68 men's basketball victory Coppin State in Memorial Hall this afternoon. Wiley was 11-for-15 from the field and also led the Hornets with seven rebounds in the contest.
Myles Carter came off the bench to add a career-high 17 points, while
John Crosby chipped in with 14 for the Hornets, who snapped a three-game losing streak to improve to 3-17 overall and 2-4 in the MEAC this season.
"This was an outstanding team effort, although Pinky really stood out with his leadership and overall play," said Delaware State Head Coach
Eric Skeeters, who recorded his second straight win over Coppin State. Skeeters began his collegiate coach career as a Coppin State assistant in the 1990s.
"When Pinky plays that way, it's really a lift to the team because he's such a heady player," Skeeters added.
Wiley scored 15 points in the second half on seven-for-nine shooting from the field.
Coppin State was in control early in the game, opening up a 21-13 lead after a basket by Dejuan Clayton with 9:29 left in the first half.
The Hornets rebounded with a 17-5 run and opened up a 30-26 lead on a jumper by Carter with 4:32 to go before halftime.
Delaware State held a 37-34 lead at the break. The Hornets forced the Eagles into 11-for-34 shooting for the field in the first half.
The score was 39-39 early in the second half ran off the next eight points to take the lead for good.
Chris Sodom, a 7-3 center playing his third game for the Hornets capped off the run with a dunk, to give DSU a 47-39 lead at the 15:36 mark of the second half.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. | Evins Desir scored 16 points and
Nasir Core finished with 14 points as the Florida A&M University men's basketball team held off Bethune-Cookman, 73-67, in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) game on Saturday at the Al Lawson Center.
Florida A&M (7-13 overall, 5-4 MEAC), which beat Bethune-Cookman at home for the first time since the 2012-13 season, led by as many as 15 points in the first half, but saw the advantage evaporate in the second half. Bethune-Cookman led by three points in the second half, but could not hold on as FAMU earned the MEAC victory.
Florida A&M (6-13 overall, 4-4 MEAC), which saw its two-game winning streak snapped on Monday, went over four minutes without a bucket in the first half as Norfolk State took a 42-23 lead into the half. The Rattlers closed the gap to 18 points in the second half but could not get any closer.
Desir finished just two points shy of tying his career high as he poured in 16 points, three rebounds, one block and one steal. Core tallied 14 points, three assists, two boards and two steals, while
MJ Randolph recorded 11 points and nine boards.
Brendon Myles and
DJ Jones each registered 10 points.
Leon Redd paced Bethune-Cookman with 16 points, three rebounds and two assists. Cletrell Pope chipped in 14 points, six boards, one block and one steal, while Isaiah Bailey added 14 points, eight rebounds, one block and one steal.

North Carolina A&T State 74, Norfolk State 68
GREENSBORO, N.C. – North Carolina A&T knocked Norfolk State from the ranks of the conference unbeaten, as the Aggies top the Spartan men's basketball team 74-68 on Saturday afternoon at the Corbett Sports Center.
NSU never led in the game, and the Aggies went ahead by as much as 14. They held that 14-point advantage late in the contest before the Spartans got as close as four.
Norfolk State was unable to overcome 21 turnovers despite outscoring the Aggies by seven in the second half. The Spartans fell to 6-1 in the MEAC and 10-12 overall.
North Carolina A&T improved to 7-1 in the league as well as 11-12 overall after the battle for first.
Sophomore
Joe Bryant Jr. led all scorers with 17 points on 6-of-13 shooting, 3-of-6 from deep, with six rebounds, three assists and three steals. He was one of four Spartans in double figures.
The Aggies had all five starters reach double figures, but just six players got in the scoring column. NSU's bench outscored A&T's by a 33-7 margin.
The Spartans trailed by 13 at the break. They made it interesting in the second half, however.
After the Aggies went ahead by 14 a few minutes in, the Spartans scored eight straight to make it a 40-34 game four and a half minutes into the second period. Senior
Steven Whitley had two buckets during that time, but A&T scored the next six points to go back ahead by double digits.
It was a 48-41 ballgame after freshman
Tyrese Jenkins knocked down a shot from long range at the 10:46 mark. The Aggies surged back ahead by 13 before a 10-3 run by NSU made it 60-54. Jenkins had seven points during that time as a second-half spark off the bench, and Bryant finished the run with a trey with 5:25 left in the game.

North Carolina Central 73, South Carolina State 56
DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University shot 65.4% from the floor in the second half, and 51.8% from the floor for the game against South Carolina State, as the Eagles defeated the Bulldogs 73-56 on Saturday, Feb. 1 inside McDougald-McLendon Arena.
Neither team led by more than four points in the first half as NCCU (9-12, 5-2 MEAC) and SCSU (9-11, 4-4 MEAC) traded the lead back and forth over the first 20 minutes. With the game at 27 with 1:18 left in the first period, the Eagles scored the final four points of the half to take a 31-27 lead at the break.
After that point, the Eagles held the lead for the remainder of the game, and led by as many as 24 in the second period.
C.J. Keyser (Baltimore, Md.) scored a career-high 23 points, and
Jordan Perkins (Greensboro, N.C.) dished out a game-high seven assists with six points and four rebounds. With those seven assists, Perkins now has 413 career assists, and has the second-most career assists all time at NCCU.
Jibri Blount (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was the third Eagle to score in double-figures with 10 points and five boards, and now scored 10+ points in 16 consecutive games.

Morgan State 89, Howard 83
WASHINGTON --
Malik Miller had 19 points to lead five Morgan State players in double figures as the Bears got past Howard 89-83 on Saturday. Troy Baxter Jr. added 18 points for the Bears.
Stanley Davis chipped in 14, Sherwyn Devonish scored 13 and
Jamar Brown had 10. Baxter had nine rebounds, while Davis posted six assists. Devonish had six assists.
Nate Garvey had 19 points for the Bison (2-21, 0-8 Mid-Eastern Conference), who have now lost 11 straight games. Wayne Bristol Jr. added 17 points.
Zion Cousins had 15 points, seven rebounds and five blocks.
The Bears improve to 2-0 against the Bison on the season. Morgan State defeated Howard 68-58 on Jan. 18.
