Of the seven on-field officials who will take to the gridiron on Sunday for Super Bowl LIV in Miami, Fla.
(6:30 p.m. EST on FOX), three have ties to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).
Barry Anderson, Greg Steed and Boris Cheek will serve as umpire, back judge and side judge, respectively, on Sunday. Anderson and Steed are former officials for the MEAC, and to this day, all three are involved with the conference. Today, they serve as graders for MEAC Coordinator of Officials Andre Lowe, and they have all served as trainers for Lowe's officiating camps and clinics.
Anderson, who has been an NFL official since 2007, was a MEAC official for one season. Steed (a Howard graduate) has worked NFL games since 2003. He was a MEAC official from 1996-2002.
Though Cheek didn't serve as a MEAC official, he is a former basketball player and graduate of Morgan State. He has served as an NFL official since 1999.
The Undefeated spotlighted the officiating crew, which will have five African-Americans. Among those quoted in the story is Johnny Grier, a former NFL official who also served at one time as the MEAC's Coordinator of Officials for football.
