A most unusual season reaches another milestone this weekend, as Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) women's basketball sees the beginning of league play -- including an intriguing early-season matchup between teams that are a combined 7-2 so far.
Morgan State (3-1) will play host to Howard (4-1) on Saturday and Sunday, tipping at 2 p.m. both days. Saturday's contest will be the first MEAC contest on FloHoops this season.
North Carolina Central will hit the road to face Norfolk State on Saturday and Sunday.
The Delaware State-Coppin State double-dip this weekend has been moved to Monday and Tuesday, with 5:30 p.m. tipoffs each night, and the North Carolina A&T State-South Carolina State pair will not be played this weekend; instead, the Lady Bulldogs will open MEAC play against the Aggies on Jan. 9-10.
This season will see teams split into divisions -- Northern and Southern -- in an effort to reduce travel time, missed class time, travel budgets and eliminate air travel. Coppin State, Delaware State, Howard and Morgan State will make up the Northern Division, with Norfolk State, North Carolina A&T State, North Carolina Central and South Carolina State in the Southern Division.
All eight teams will be eligible for the 2021 MEAC Basketball Tournament (March 10-13, Norfolk Scope Arena).
Howard's Jayla Thornton was named MEAC Player of the Week after dropping 29 points against Richmond on Dec. 22. Her teammate Kaiya Creek was named Rookie of the Week, while Coppin State's Rebecca Wilson was named Defensive Player of the Week.
All games are subject to change.
