NORFOLK, Va., Dec. 29, 2020—
Howard University senior Jayla Thornton was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, the conference office announced today.
Teammate Kaiya Creek was named Rookie of the Week, and
Coppin State sophomore Rebecca Wilson was named Defensive Player of the Week.
Thornton (G, 5-9, Sr., Newark, N.J.) poured in a season-high 29 points against Richmond on Tuesday, Dec. 22, going 7-for-17 from the floor and hitting all 10 of her free throws. In helping the Bison to their third win over an Atlantic 10 school this season, Thornton also hit five 3-pointers, grabbed five boards and two steals.
Creek (F, 5-10, Fr., Seat Pleasant, Md.) had nine points on four field goals (including 1-for-3 from behind the arc) and six rebounds against Richmond, while also blocking two shots, grabbing a steal and recording an assist.
Wilson (F/C, 6-4, So., Mount Vernon, N.Y.) grabbed a season-high 10 rebounds – eight of which came on the defensive end – on Monday against La Salle in what was Coppin State’s first game in more than a month.
Other Top Performers
Hope Evans (CSU) grabbed six rebounds and had an assist to go along with three points against La Salle.
Aliyah Lawson (CSU) had 15 points and three assists against La Salle.
Brooklyn Fort-Davis (HOW) grabbed six rebounds and had two steals against Richmond.
