NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State and Old Dominion will renew a longstanding rivalry in men's basketball this year at NSU, and it was announced today that WGNT CW 27 will broadcast the game live. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. on Dec. 2 at Joseph Echols Hall.
WGNT CW 27 is the Scripps Broadcastings' CW television affiliate in Norfolk and a sister station of WTKR News 3, Norfolk's CBS-affiliated station.
"Although I know many Hampton Roads fans are disappointed that in-person attendance is not possible for this intracity basketball game, we are so pleased that WTKR/WGNT agreed to televise this game, allowing our community to watch the action from the safety of their homes," NSU Director of Athletics Melody Webb said. "We appreciate the partnership with News 3 and the cooperation of Old Dominion. It will be a great opportunity for our community to have a distraction from the current crisis and enjoy a night of college basketball between Norfolk's two Division I programs."
This will be NSU's first home game against ODU since the 1968-69 season and jus the second ever. Old Dominion and Norfolk State last played during the 2017-18 campaign at the Norfolk Scope Arena. The Spartans will make the return trip to ODU's Chartway Arena during the 2022-23 season. The Monarchs hold a 13-6 series edge against the Spartans in a rivalry that began in 1965-66.
Norfolk State will conduct its non-conference basketball home games in November and December without spectators following Governor Ralph Northam's Amendment to the Executive Order 67 last week. Echols Hall will be restricted to the team travel parties, essential personnel, media and a limited number of family members.
WTKR News 3 Sports Director Adam Winkler will host pre-game and halftime coverage. Veteran play-by-play man Patrick Johnson and Brian Mull, basketball analyst for The Athletic, will call the game.
"WTKR/WGNT have been great broadcast partners over the years for local sports. Televising the ODU vs. NSU men's basketball game is another example of News 3 continuing to add value to and meeting the needs and interests of our local community," said Dr. Wood Selig, ODU's Athletics Director.
