NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State head volleyball coach Kathy Bullock has announced that Jazmyne Johnson will serve as an assistant coach with the program. A graduate of Mississippi State, the former middle blocker will bring the experience from a high-level playing career to the Spartan program.
"Jazmyne is like a breath of fresh air. She's played high-level volleyball her entire life. She's energetic and I'm excited to have her working with me to assist in taking this team to the next level," Bullock said. "I trust her when I'm not there. She's a good person, and she knows what it takes to win. I'm grateful to the administration for helping me to get Jazmyne here at Norfolk State."
In 2018, Johnson assisted the coaching staff at Texas Women's University, helping the Pioneers finish with an 18-win season while working with the middle blockers. She spent the 2019 campaign as a graduate assistant at Harding University, which finished 21-11 and advanced to the conference tournament championship match. She again worked with the middles, including all-conference blockers Libby Hinton and Kelli McKinnon.
She also spent time as a head coach with 360 Volleyball Club in Texas in 2019 and as an assistant at various university summer camps the last few years.
Johnson played for two seasons at Mississippi State in 2015-16 after starting her career at Middle Tennessee State. At MSU, she led the team with 89 blocks her junior year and 136 as a senior in 2016, the latter of which ranks fourth in the school's single-season records. She landed on the Maroon Classic All-Tournament Team as a junior when she also averaged 1.82 kills per set for the year. MSU finished with a winning record in 2015, its first in nine years.
As a redshirt sophomore in 2014 at Middle Tennessee State, Johnson was named to the Seton Hall Classic All-Tournament Team. She ranked third in Conference USA with 1.10 blocks per set to go along with 2.28 kills. She tallied 1.36 kills and 0.86 blocks her redshirt freshman campaign in 2013. After just two years, she ranked seventh all-time at MTSU in total blocks. She was named to the Dean's List and the conference honor roll during her time at both schools.
The DeSoto, Texas native received her bachelor's degree in communications with a concentration in broadcast journalism from Mississippi State in December of 2016. Johnson is working on her master's in business administration from Harding.
