NORFOLK, Va., Jan. 30, 2020--The calendar flips to February and the race for the 2019-20 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) women's basketball regular-season crown heats up this weekend with nine games on the docket -- including a match-up of two top-four teams in Greensboro, N.C. on Saturday.
Conference-leading Norfolk State (6-0) will take on North Carolina A&T State (5-2) to highlight Saturday's schedule -- which will also see Bethune-Cookman (6-1) head up to Tallahassee, Fla. to take on rival Florida A&M, Morgan State (6-2) squaring off against Howard in Burr Gymnasium, Coppin State at Delaware State and South Carolina State traveling to Durham, N.C. to take North Carolina Central.
The Lady Bears are red hot, having won their last four to vault into third place in the MEAC standings. Their streak is second only to the Spartans and Wildcats, who have each won their last six games.
On Monday, Coppin State will pay Howard a visit, while Norfolk State will be at North Carolina Central, Maryland Eastern Shore will head up Rt. 13 to take on Delaware State and South Carolina State will square off against the Aggies in the Corbett Sports Center.
After this week's action, Bethune-Cookman's Amaya Scott and Morgan State's Chelsea Mitchell have been named MEAC Co-Players of the Week, while Florida A&M's Alaina Rice and Coppin State's Chance Graham were named Rookie and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively.
Graham, who ranks 16th nationally in defensive rebounds per game, is currently 10th in MEAC in career rebounding history with 1,073 rebounds.
The Spartans' Chanette Hicks continues to show why she's one of the league's most dynamic players -- and possibly one of the best in the nation. Heading into this weekend's action, she leads the nation in field goals made, while ranking second in total steals and steals per game and third in field goal attempts and triple-doubles.
Hicks is also fifth in total points, seventh in points per game and 34th in assists per game.
Mitchell, who leads the MEAC with nine double-doubles this season (including in each of her last two games), is third nationally in total steals, sixth in steals per game and eighth in offensive rebounding. She is also 25th in the nation in total rebounding.
Howard's Jayla Thornton is fifth in the nation in 3-point attempts, 15th in total 3-pointers made and 21st in 3-pointers made per game.
