MEAC Announces Weekly Women's Basketball Honors

NORFOLK, Va., Jan. 28, 2020Bethune-Cookman junior Amaya Scott and Morgan State senior Chelsea Mitchell were selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women’s Basketball Co-Players of the Week, the conference office announced today. Florida A&M’ Alaina Rice was named Rookie of the Week, while Coppin State senior Chance Graham earned Defensive Player of the Week honors.
 
Scott (F, 6-1, Jr., Sunrise, Fla.) averaged 20.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game this past week, shooting a combined 55.2 percent (16-for-29) from the floor. She opened the week with a 23-point, 6-rebound, 3-assist, 3-steal, 2-block performance in a win over North Carolina A&T State (going 11-for-18 from the floor), before dropping 17 points and grabbing 10 boards against South Carolina State.
 
Mitchell (G, 5-9, Sr., Columbia, Md.) averaged a double-double as Morgan State’s winning streak grew to four games, going for 17.5 points and 12.0 rebounds per contest. She was a combined 13-for-26 (50.0 percent) from the floor for the week. Against Coppin State, Mitchell had 15 points, 10 rebounds and five steals, and she followed that on Monday with a 20-point, 14-rebound effort against Maryland Eastern Shore.
 
Rice (G/F, 5-9, Fr., Rockledge, Fla.) dropped 22 points, grabbed seven rebounds and had five assists, two blocked shots and two steals against Howard on Saturday, before adding 11 points and four boards against Norfolk State. For the week, Rice averaged 16.5 points per game.
 
Graham (F, 6-1, Sr., Upper Marlboro, Md.) averaged 13.5 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 2.5 blocked shots in two games this past week. Of her 27 total rebounds, 21 were on the defensive end – and Graham is now 10th in MEAC history with 1,073 career rebounds. She had 19 rebounds (13 defensive), five steals and four blocked shots against Howard on Monday, and on Saturday, she had eight rebounds (all on the defensive end) and two blocks.
 
Other Top Performers
Alexandria Hamilton (CSU) scored six points each against Morgan State and Howard.
 
Lanayjha Ashe (DSU) had 18 points and seven rebounds against North Carolina Central.
 
Brooklyn Fort-Davis (HOW) had 11 points and four rebounds against Coppin State.
 
Ayonna Williams (HOW) dropped 25 points to go along with five rebounds and four steals against Florida A&M, and she eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for her career against Coppin State.
 
Jayla Jones-Pack (NCAT) had 11 points, 11 rebounds and two blocked shots against Delaware State.
 
Mikaya Wilson (NCAT) went 7-for-13 from the floor against Delaware State, going for 18 points, six rebounds and four steals.
 
Chanette Hicks (NSU) had 22 points, six steals and four assists against South Carolina State.
 
La’Deja James (NSU) had five steals against Florida A&M and four against South Carolina State.
