NORFOLK, Va., Jan. 23, 2020--With Norfolk State atop the standings for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) women, positioning will become key as January bleeds into February and the scrum leading up to the 2020 MEAC Basketball Tournament takes shape.
Saturday's action will be highlighted by Bethune-Cookman traveling to Greensboro, N.C. to take on North Carolina A&T State. The game will be streamed live on FloHoops and feature the 2018-19 regular-season champion against the tournament champion.
Both teams are 4-1 in league play, behind the 4-0 Spartans, who take on South Carolina State and Florida A&M this weekend..
Morgan State is 4-2 in MEAC play, fourth in the standings after this past week, which saw the Lady Bears defeat both Howard and North Carolina A&T State. Monday's win over the Aggies snapped their 28-game MEAC regular-season winning streak -- a streak that had dated back to the 2017-18 season.
South Carolina State's Heniaya Moton was named MEAC Player of the Week following her 33-point performance this past Monday in a win over Maryland Eastern Shore. North Carolina Central's Anissa Rivera earned Rookie of the Week honors for the third time this season, while Le'on Hill of North Carolina A&T State was named Defensive Player of the Week.
Hicks currently leads Div. I in field goals made, while she also ranks second in the nation in steals, third in total points, field goal attempts and triple-doubles and sixth in scoring. She is also 16th in the nation in assists per game.
Morgan State's Chelsea Mitchell if fifth nationally in steals per game, 10th in offensive rebounds per game, 36th in total rebounds and 40th in double-doubles (with a MEAC-high seven).
Howard's Jayla Thornton is 15th in the nation in total 3-pointers made, with Amanda Carney of Maryland Eastern Shore sitting 44th. Thornton is also 17th in 3-pointers made per game.
Coppin State's Chance Graham is 28th nationally in defensive rebounds per game. She has 1,046 career rebounds coming into the weekend, tying her Rachel Gordon (Norfolk State, 2010-14) for 10th on the MEAC's all-time career rebounding list.
