NORFOLK, Va., Jan. 23, 2020 – The grind of the 2019-20 season continues this week as schools start to settle into conference play, with this week’s slate including the conference’s first ESPNU broadcast of the season.
SATURDAY’S GAMES
On Saturday, Morgan State visits Coppin State as the two Baltimore foes square off. Howard will welcome Florida A&M to Washington, D.C., while Bethune-Cookman will travel to Greensboro, N.C. to take on North Carolina A&T State in a game that will be shown live on FloHoops.
Delaware State will visit North Carolina Central and South Carolina State will travel to Norfolk State.
MONDAY’S SLATE
Monday’s slate will also feature five games; Howard will travel to Coppin State to take on the Bison’s Baltimore rivals in another FloHoops contest. Morgan State will travel across the state to take on Maryland Eastern Shore, while Delaware State will visit North Carolina A&T State. Bethune-Cookman will conclude its trip through the Carolinas against South Carolina State and Florida A&M will wrap up its road swing against Norfolk State.
The Florida A&M vs. Norfolk State game will be the MEAC’s first broadcast of the season on ESPNU and will be live Monday night at 7 p.m. from Echols Hall.
AROUND THE MEAC
Norfolk State sits atop the conference at 4-0, while South Carolina State and North Carolina A&T State are a half game back and sit tied for second with matching 4-1 records.
North Carolina A&T State’s Kameron Langley logged his third double-double of the season against Morgan State, setting career highs in points (22) and assists (12). Ronald Jackson had his ninth double-double of the season, with 12 points and a career-high 18 boards.
Coppin State’s Brendan Medley-Bacon and North Carolina Central’s Jibri Blount were named MEAC Co-Players of the Week. Blount averaged over 20 points on 60-percent shooting and nine boards per game. This marks the third straight week Blount has won the honor. Medley-Bacon finished with career-highs in points (19) and rebounds (14). He also added four blocks and a pair of steals.
Medley-Bacon was also named MEAC Defensive Player of the Week.
Norfolk State’s Tyrese Jenkins was named MEAC Rookie of the Week after finishing with a career-high 19 points against Maryland Eastern Shore.
MILLSTONE & HIGHLIGHTS
Howard’s Charles Williams scored 28 points over the weekend and he now has 2,163 points, passing Coppin State’s Tywain McKee for second place on the MEAC’s all-time scoring list behind Tom Davis (Delaware State), who holds the record with 2,275 total points.
Morgan State is ranked seventh in the nation in free throws made with 335 made and South Carolina State holds the same position for free-throw percentage with a 78.2 percentage.
Bethune-Cookman’s senior forward Cletrell Pope leads the nation in offensive rebounds per game, averaging 4.79, he is also ranked fifth in total rebounds per game with 11.9, fourth in total rebounds with 227 and he is sixth in the nation in double-doubles with 11.
Delaware State’s John Crosby leads the MEAC in scoring averaging 22.1 points per game, which is good enough to be ninth in the nation.
