NORFOLK, Va., Jan. 2, 2020—For the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference's (MEAC) 11 basketball-playing institutions, Saturday marks the beginning of conference play, as the fight for top billing at the 2020 MEAC Basketball Tournament begins with the turning of the calendar.
Florida A&M wrapped up its non-conference slate in style on Tuesday, upsetting Iowa State in Ames, Iowa 70-68. Rod Melton, Jr. led the way with 20 points, and he had the game-winning basket with 10 seconds left. D.J. Jones added 16 points for the Rattlers.
North Carolina A&T State will close out its non-conference schedule on Thursday at home against Mid-Atlantic Christian.
On Saturday, Morgan State will visit Delaware State to tip-off conference play. South Carolina State will visit Coppin State, Florida A&M will head to Durham, N.C. to take on three-time defending MEAC Tournament champion North Carolina Central, and Maryland Eastern Shore will play host to Howard.
Bethune-Cookman will also hit the road to take on Norfolk State.
Monday, the second day of MEAC play, will feature three games. South Carolina State concludes its Baltimore road trip against Morgan State, while Howard will play host to Bethune-Cookman and Coppin State will wrap up the slate by hosting Norfolk State.
Norfolk State guard Steven Whitley was named MEAC Co-Player of the Week after logging a double-double against Stony Brook. He finished with 14 points and 10 boards, and he also dished out eight assists and was active on the defensive end with two steals.
Coppin State's Koby Thomas was named MEAC Co-Player of the Week after putting up 15.5 points, 8.5 boards, 2.0 steals and 1.5 blocked shots over two games during the past week. He had 14 points and 11 rebounds against Fordham along with 17 points and three steals against Mount St. Mary's.
Cletrell Pope of Bethune-Cookman was named MEAC Defensive Player of the Week after pulling 19 boards and blocking two shots against Saint Louis. He scored 11 points and made one assist against the Billikens and recorded his 30
th career double-double.
This marked the sixth time this season Pope was named Defensive Player of the Week.
North Carolina A&T State's Harry Morrice was named MEAC Rookie of the Week after finishing with nine points and five rebounds against Illinois. He is the second Aggie to win the award this season.
Bethune Cookman's Wali Parks had a career-high 16 points against Saint Louis and Pope matched a season-high with 19 boards. Charles Williams of Howard scored 16 points against Penn. He's now tied with Morgan State's Reggie Holmes for fourth place in MEAC history (2,051 points).
North Carolina Central's Jibri Blount scored a season-high 33 points against Mid-Atlantic Christian this past week, while South Carolina State Coach Murray Garvin won his 75
th career game at the school with a 58-52 win over Jacksonville.
