NORFOLK, Va., Jan. 16, 2020--Two weeks of conference play are in the books as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference’s (MEAC) 11 programs are all fighting for positioning before the calendar flips over to February.
After two weeks of MEAC action, both defending regular-season champion Norfolk State and North Carolina A&T State sit atop the standings at 3-0, while Bethune-Cookman is just behind those two teams at 3-1. South Carolina State and defending tournament champion North Carolina Central are 2-1 in league play.
This Saturday features a full five games on the slate. North Carolina A&T State will tip off the day with a visit to Baltimore, Md. to take on Coppin State, while South Carolina State will play host to Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman will take on North Carolina Central.
Howard will hit the road to take on Morgan State in a D.C.-Baltimore showdown and Norfolk State will face Maryland Eastern Shore.
Howard will take a brief respite for MEAC play on Monday, welcoming Yale to Burr Gymnasium for a rare January non-conference game to celebrate Martin Luther King Day.
The rest of Monday’s slate will see North Carolina Central wrap up its Florida trip with a visit to Florida A&M. North Carolina A&T State, meanwhile, will conclude its Baltimore trip with a visit to Morgan State and Maryland Eastern Shore will pay South Carolina State a visit.

For the third time this season, Bethune-Cookman’s Cletrell Pope was named MEAC Co-Player of the Week. In addition, he was named Defensive Player of the Week for the seventh time this season.
This marked the third time this season he claimed both honors in the same week.
North Carolina Central’s Jibri Blount was named MEAC Co-Player of the Week for the second time this season, and North Carolina A&T State’s Fred Cleveland, Jr. earned MEAC Rookie of the Week honors for the second time this season.
Pope scored a career-high 29 points and pulled down 18 boards against Morgan State on Monday for his 11
th double-double of the year. He’s currently third in the nation in double-doubles.
Coppin State’s Ibn Williams scored a career-high 18 points against Bethune-Cookman, while Dejuan Clayton had two assists to pass Vince Goldsberry for eighth place in Coppin State history.
Howard’s Charles Williams scored 14 points against Norfolk State and poured in a season-high 34 points against South Carolina State. He now has 2,135 career points, needing just 24 points to pass Coppin State’s Tywain McKee for second place on the MEAC’s all-time scoring list.
Howard’s Zion Cousins logged his fourth double-double of the season against South Carolina State, finishing with career highs in points (21) and rebounds (14).
Norfolk State coach Robert Jones won his 75
th career conference game with a 71-63 victory over Howard on Saturday.
Meanwhile, North Carolina A&T State has scored at least 90 points in four straight games.
