MEAC Women's Basketball: Two Unbeatens Going into Week 3 of League Play

2019-20 MEAC Women's Basketball Statistics | MEAC Women's Basketball Notes

NORFOLK, Va., Jan. 16, 2020--
After two weeks of Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) women's basketball action, there are still two teams with unblemished league records: preseason favorite North Carolina A&T State and Norfolk State.

Both the Aggies and Spartans are 3-0 after the first two weekends of 2020, while defending MEAC Tournament champion Bethune-Cookman is right on their heels at 3-1. The Wildcats have won three straight games after losing their conference opener to Norfolk State.

The Spartans, meanwhile, already boasts wins over Bethune-Cookman and Howard.

Delaware State, despite its loss to North Carolina A&T State this past Monday, is 2-1 in MEAC play. The Hornets, in their second season under head coach David Caputo, have already won six games in 2019-20 (after winning seven games all of last season).

Howard and Morgan State are currently 2-2 in MEAC play.

Norfolk State guard Chanette Hicks was yet again named MEAC Player of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week after her monster game this past Saturday against Howard (30 points on 11-for-23 shooting, 8-for-10 free throws, nine steals, seven assists, five rebounds, two blocks). It was her sixth Player of the Week and sixth Defensive Player of the Week honor this season -- and it marked the fifth time she's won both in the same week.

North Carolina Central's Anissa Rivera had double-doubles this past week against Delaware State and Maryland Eastern Shore en route to earning MEAC Rookie of the Week honors for the second time this season.

Hicks leads all of Div. I in field goals made this season, while also ranking second in the nation in field goal attempts, total points, total steals, steals per game and triple-doubles. She is also fourth in free throw attempts, sixth in points per game, 19th in total assists and 21st in both minutes played per game and assists per game.

Morgan State's Chelsea Mitchell, who leads the MEAC with seven double-doubles this season, is fourth in the nation in total steals, seventh in steals per game, eighth in offensive rebounds per game, 27th in double-doubles and 31st in total rebounds.

Howard's Jayla Thornton is third in the nation in 3-point field goal attempts, seventh in total 3-pointers made and 14th in 3-pointers made per game. Her teammate Ayonna Williams is 31st in Div. I in free throw percentage, and Imani Bryant is 45th in blocked shots.

Maryland Eastern Shore's Amanda Carney ranks 30th in total 3-pointers made, 36th in 3-point attempts and 37th in 3-pointers made per game. Delaware State's Lyric Turner ranks 26th nationally in 3-point attempts.

Morgan State's Jihayah Chavis and South Carolina State's Jacquece Alston are tied for 46th in the nation in total steals. Chance Graham of Coppin State is 22nd in the nation in defensive rebounds per game and 48th in double-doubles with six.
