MEAC Volleyball: Conference Play Starts This Weekend

MEAC Weekly Volleyball Notes | 2019 MEAC Volleyball Statistics

The conference slate begins this weekend for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference's (MEAC) 11 volleyball-playing institutions, with a tweaked format from now until mid-November as teams vie for one of the eight spots in November's championship tournament.

This past weekend saw Howard nab a win over a Big Ten opponent, as the Bison took down Rutgers in four sets in Burr Gymnasium. It marked the MEAC's second win over a Power Five conference opponent in 2019, along with Morgan State's five-set win over Seton Hall out of the Big East earlier this season.

Delaware State picked up wins over Fairleigh Dickinson and Hampton this past weekend, and with five wins already in 2019, the Hornets have surpassed their win total from a year ago. Bethune-Cookman (over Nicholls State), Florida A&M (over Southern), Maryland Eastern Shore (over Hartford) and Morgan State (over Binghamton) also had wins this past weekend.

North Carolina Central got its first win of 2019 on Tuesday, defeating The Citadel in four sets.

North Carolina A&T State's Edie Brewer was named MEAC Player of the Week after recording two more triple-doubles this past weekend, giving her three for the season and four for her career. The do-it-all junior from West Chester, Ohio averaged 3.5 kills, 6.2 assists and 2.7 digs per set this past weekend, hitting .349.

The Aggies' Addy Warfield and Andrea Laboy-Rivera were named Rookie of the Week and Defensive Specialist of the Week, respectively, while Mrogan State's Roi Wallace was named Setter of the Week.

Heading into this weekend's action, Morgan State boasts the conference's best record at 6-7.

Conference play has a different wrinkle in 2019; while the schools will still be split into the Northern and Southern divisions -- and qualification for the MEAC Volleyball Championship (Nov. 22-24 in Washington, D.C.) remains the same -- every MEAC school will play each other this season.

In-division teams will play home-and-homes, as in seasons past. But starting this season, teams will play out-of-division foes once, in matches that count toward the MEAC standings.

At the end of the regular season, the top four teams in each division will qualify for the conference tournament.

Florida A&M is ineligible for the conference title and postseason play this season.
