MEAC Announces Weekly Cross Country Honors

NORFOLK, Va., Sept. 18, 2019Norfolk State sophomore Meshack Kipchirchir was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week, the conference office announced today. Norfolk State senior Martha Bissah was named Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Week.
 
Kipchirchir (So., Eldoret, Kenya) clocked an 8K time of 25:27.5 in his first cross country meet as a Spartan at the Cavalier Classic hosted by the University of Virginia. He placed 29th in the season-opening meet for the Spartans, which included runners from Duke, Tennessee, Virginia, and North Carolina—three of the top 10 ranked teams in the Southeast region. His time is the second-fastest 8K time in the MEAC so far this season.
 
Bissah (Sr., Accra, Ghana) finished 10th to lead the Norfolk State women at the Cavalier Classic. She posted a time of 17:52.9 in a meet which included runners from Virginia, Tennessee, Maryland, and North Carolina, The two-time defending MEAC individual cross country champion currently has the conference’s fastest 5K time.
 
Other Top Performers
Carlin Berryhill (B-CU) placed 17th at the Mountain Dew Invitational, hosted by the University of Florida, with an 8K time of 26:20.06.
 
Shyanne Mayes (B-CU) was the lead Lady Wildcat at the Mountain Dew Invitational, finishing 161st in 21:35.86.
 
Aurelia Jepkorir (UMES) got third place overall at the William & Mary Invitational with a 5K time of 18:53.94.
 
Edwin Kipruto (UMES) ran a personal-best 20:05.81 at the William & Mary Invitational.
