MEAC Volleyball: Last Weekend of Non-Conference Tourneys

MEAC Week 4 Notes | 2019 MEAC Volleyball Statistics

This coming weekend marks the final weekend of non-conference tournaments for Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) volleyball programs, and eight of the league's 11 volleyball-playing schools will be in action.

Norfolk State and South Carolina State are idle until conference play starts on Friday, Sept. 27. North Carolina Central has a non-conference match on Tuesday, Sept. 24 against The Citadel, but will not be in action this weekend.

This past weekend saw Delaware State and North Carolina A&T State each win a pair of matches. The Hornets defeated Siena and Merrimack this past weekend, and with three wins in 2019, they have already surpassed their win total from 2018. North Carolina A&T State, in defeating Gardner-Webb and Alabama A&M, picked up its first two wins of the season.

The Aggies' Edie Brewer notched a triple-double of 34 assists, 14 kills and 11 digs against Gardner-Webb. It was her second career triple-double and the fourth in North Carolina A&T State history. It was the first triple-double in the MEAC since Savannah State's Salma Gonzalez notched 16 assists, 12 digs and 10 kills against Norfolk State last season.

Gonzalez, who had two triple-doubles in 2018, is now on Coppin State's roster.

Other winners this past weekend include Coppin State (over Fairleigh Dickinson) and Maryland Eastern Shore (over Rider).

Morgan State, despite losing all three matches this past weekend, still has the MEAC's best record at 5-5.

Maryland Eastern Shore's Mauri Carver was named MEAC Player of the Week, thanks to her offensive prowess and her performance at the net this past weekend. Delaware State's Ryanne Burnett repeated as Rookie of the Week. Coppin State's Christa Johnson and North Carolina A&T State's Shaylynn Hall both blocked their way to sharing the Defensive Specialist of the Week honor, and Brewer was named Setter of the Week.
